Your views on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

MODS, if this is inappropriate, I will gladly delete this tread.
On August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb named Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later the atomic bomb named Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. What are your feelings toward these actions? Was the United States justified by using these weapons?
I believe that the U.S. did the right thing. It saved the lives of both the Japanese and the U.S military. The war would have gone on much longer. And a little known fact was that the Japanese were working on an Atomic weapon also. They surely would have used it on the United States.

Having samurai blood in me I can say that I think it was needed. War is War. It pretty much obliterated the Will of Japan.

On a side note.... Look at the relations between the US and Japan today. Overall I would have to say they are pretty damn good. I know Japan is getting tired of having American military bases out there but who wouldn't be.

 

Would have never happened if they would of stayed away from Pearl Harbor...they messed with the bull, they got the horns.

 

I think Nazi Germany need a couple too...regardless if they already surrendered, maybe one just for good measure

I disagree. The attack on Pearl Harbor was cowardly and terrible, but they attacked a military area. These bombs killed/ruined the lives of thousands of Japanese civilians. It's on a whole different level.

Whether it was a good move or not, I have no idea and no real opinion. If it meant preventin them from dropping a bomb on us, then hell yeah. But who's to know?

 

We might have suffered a million Americans dead and wounded, with ten times that number of Japanese casualties during an invasion of Kyushu and Honshu. The world sees those terrible pictures of people with radiation burns but there are no pictures of the millions and millions of Americans and Japanese that were spared the horror of an invasion. We did the right thing using the bomb (Home Alive in 45!).

 

The A-bombs ended the war with Japan. That was the objective wasn't it?

 

Given that point in history, there was no other choice. Save for only a handful, no one had any idea of where we would be today. Given the intensity of the battles for Japanese locations grew tremendously as the war came closer to the mainland, invading Japan really would have been disasterous. After Okinowa, I would have dropped a six pack of nukes on them if it was me. I think any of the powers would have used the technology had it been available to them.
The problem came when the greed of the American and the Soviets got out of hand. Who has the biggest dick contest, IMO. Everyone had to have some of that German technology. Once they started, it was like opening Pandora's Box.

So, yes I do think it is justified. They got what they deserved IMO.

 

There is no doubt in my mind that the Japanese nor the Germans would have hesitated one minute to use them on us if they had them. I'm only sorry we didn't do it sooner and save thousands of US lives. The Japanese did horrible things in China, Korea and the Phillipines. What we did by dropping the bombs was end the suffering of millions world wide. I'm sorry that civilians lost there lives but I refuse to feel any guilt. They started it, we finished it. I just wish we had to balls to drop them on Tora Bora and vaporize those assholes as well.

Largest act of terrorism ever! Was it justified? Difficult to say because we will never know what would have happened if these bombs weren't dropped.

 

The japanese screwed up. They were going to declare war on us just prior to the attack on pearl. We were asking for it. We put a fuel embargo on them, which gave them no choice.
We should have seen it coming, and not left our fleet in a nice convienent grouping. The world was at war; why didn't we have anyone on watch?
Our foul up were as numerous as theirs, but we blamed them anyway.
I know we were right to use the bomb. The whole point of war is to remove the enemy's will to fight. The losses on both sides would have been much greater had we invaded the mainland.

Very good point. The U.S. pushed an oil embargo due to Japans colonial interests (invasion of China and most of Asia). The US fleet sat in the comfort of Pearl Harbor. All tied up looking very nice but not prepared in the least. History teaches us to keep prepared!

 

We dropped those nukes on strategic places with both droppings, we even let residents know to clear the area a week before we dropped them. The problem was that people had never seen an atomic bomb and couldn't have possibly known how far to evacuate. It sucks that that many civilians died but without the shock of Pearl Harbor, I dont believe we would have dropped both of those bombs.
