So I've been contemplating whether or not I should buy a snorkel for the taco I spend a lot of time at the beach which is bob hall pier or PINS down where I live. Was hoping I could get some fellow TW members thoughts and opinions on them. I know we don't have many options other then the

Dobinsons (which basically is the arb)

I found this one recently Airflow

(Also haven't seen much info about this one)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated especially from members who currently have snorkels thanks in advance.

Air filters are $12. A snorkel is $300. Do you have to change your air filter once a month? If not then your snorkel is just for looks.

Isn't the TRD snorkel available for sale as well?

Installed a safari snorkel on a friends truck last weekend, extremely well made and installs easy but my god its big.

Dobinsons has a shit template so your going to end up misdrilling holes in your truck...no bueno

Airflow is not available for 3rd gens

TRD is the sleekest of the bunch but is not available for sale at the moment and is far too tall.

Some guy put a TJM 4Runner snorkel on his truck and I feel that looks the best but its far from plug and play.

I'd change my air filter every damn week before I'd put one of those on my truck.

IMO, they look dumb as hell. If you genuinely need one, that's one thing. If not, then I wouldn't get one.

I can’t stand the fact that it faces forward. It’s not a ram air effect.

I had an ARB on my pathfinder that went up the A pillar and swept back instead of a bug catcher.

I like mine. Got the arb safari. It’s not the same as the dobinsons. Arb has 4 inch diameter dobinsons has 3.5 inch diameter at snorkel head.

Do you drive through water crossings with water to the top of your wheel well? If so, yes.

If you do and decide against a snorkle, you risk hydro-locking the engine...ask @ovrlndkull how well that worked out for him :boink:

I thought the snorkel was for dusty conditions, not water fording?

He's giving me shit and yes it'll save an engine in water crossings. I went through a water crossing the tire kickers up enough splash to suck into the intake. A cup of water in one cycl. is all she wrote.
Have you ever driven behind someone when it's dusty out the intake being up in the air like that is sucking in a lot of dust. If you're in front it helps but not if you're behind someone.

OP you can get a pre-cleaner to help from dirting up your air filter really fast.

People mis use plug and play a lot. No snorkel is plug and play. The closest thing to plug and play Ive seen on this forum is OVTune. Plug and play is literally that, plug and play. Not soldering, not nutting, not drilling, plugging in and using.

Not lazy, just not very experienced doing any of the "plug and play" truck cutting/Head unit removal/splicing etc. Ive never done any undoable type of mods on my truck because I get all ADHD when Im doing stuff and when trying to perfect it I tend to fuck up. Yes, the instructions might be simple, but that doesn't make it plug and play. Theres usually plenty of room to screw up a whole panel installing a snorkel and thats a risk I wouldn't want to take myself if I ever wanted to put one of em in my truck. I can already see myself "oh it looks a little uneven let me grind it down" and by the time its even enough for me to feel comfortable its already bigger than the damn snorkel itself.

Snorkels are good on 3rd gens if you do a lot of water crossings or go 35s and need to cut up your fender wells. They are NOT a dust shield.

The TRD "snorkels" arent dust intakes or anything and theyre not snorkels. They are a waste and dont waste your money on it.

They do have Snorkel hats that are for dust. If you ever see a round one on top, it has a centrifuge like effect and filters large dust particles out before the air goes into your intake. This is the ugliest one you can get, but the most useful.

    proxy_03f7885a4826b70f2cd57d2c8bc7b43ecb455f02.gif

A properly routed snorkel will save an engine in a water crossing. I watched my buddy cross water over his hood in his 80 series with 37s and just drove right out the other side.

Also, to the dude that doesnt like the snorkel facing forward, the top part of it that actually sucks in the air is held on by a hose clamp, you can rotate it 360 degrees whichever way you like.

    I have a 2nd gen :crapstorm:so bear with me.
I like the mild performance gains I got from it going 40mph for passing power my girl she’s a heavy heifer. Take what I can get I did notice about a 1mpg increase post install. But lost more than that with a roof rack.
I don’t enjoy deep water crossing but I got a really good deal on it so I purchased it. If I had to do again probably wouldn’t. You may bet some heckling about it from other members an friends or some random DB getting gas.

Meh, I think they look cool lol. I always wanted to put one on one of my old crawlers, but I was scared it would get ripped off.
