I cannot answer all your questions here, but I am pretty sure running the ucon and trying to hptune the ecu is a bad idea. The ucon basically changes everything going to the stock ecu so it doesn’t really have control of what is happening. Changing the tune on it if anything may make the ucon act up.

Ive had it hold fifth but it does entirely depend on the headwind
I dont see the need for a 7th when youre able to tune the stock fueling table. Granted you could still use it to get the cooling effect or added fuel if you didnt upsize injectors. The fuel table allows you to upgrade the injectors though

All good questions, @JustDSM and his "baseline optimized tunes" are safe, all stock failsafe features are in place. Now the thing with hp tuners, is you have full control, you CAN FUCK UP. But if you stick with a reasonable optimized tune you should be good just as with OEM for reliability. I ran a similar "baseline optimized tune" on a GM truck i had (6.0L LQ4) for years and years, never an issue, just better all around drive ability, performance and mpgs

As far as protecting cats goes, you’d just want to just tune a bit richer to preserve them.

Even if we take a TRD base tune and keep the AFRs in a safe range to protect the cats, there’s still a lot of room in the TRD tune for improvement.

From what I read this cost $750? Is it just a plug-in play System into the OBD2 port?

~$500. $300 for the mpvi2 and software. $200 for the 4 credits to actually tune the tacoma (one time fee per ecu)

And you should be paranoid. I've posted several times on my ordeal of having my '14 suddenly enter limp mode while out in the middle of nowhere. No fun whatsoever. If this thing can disable the SAI "strictly for off road use" sign me up too.

When the truck does go into limp mode, can one clear codes and all is good? (until it throws another?)

You can leave the emission checks in place for SAI but disable the limp mode. In other words remap the table associated with limiting the throttle angle limits during SAI faults, allowing you to drive the truck normally should you get a SAI fault.

But yes, the VCM Scanner can clear codes and display freeze frame data

Is been a while but the first thing I tried was to clear the codes to no avail but I had all the codes. So maybe yes depending on the component that fails and maybe no as in my case where the valves completely clogged with carbon, at very low mileage BTW.

The SAI seems to have some special protection afforded it in that does not allow you to ignore the matter. Even worse, once the problem parts are replaced (we now know its likely the valves and/or air pump, and the relay a distant third) the codes still linger as if to haunt you, until a complete drive cycle is finished. The limp mode went away immediately once the valves were replaced but the drive cycle took about a week for it to finish and then all codes the vanished..

I wonder if HPT could trigger “drive cycle complete”...

Just something to note, on the SAI subject. The reason that they set it up to be in limp mode with SAI error is because if one of the SAI valves get stuck open, you have exhaust coming straight from the header into the valve. Imagine if that valve was stuck open, there would be unrestricted flow of exhaust into the pipe that the SAI motor is hooked to. Having it in limp mode prevents those temps from getting too hot to melt stuff and catch things on fire, while allowing you to get safely off the road.

If you disable SAI CELs it is highly recommended to have block off plates installed.

^^^Did you download and use the Full version or download the Full and then download and use the Beta?

EDIT: We need to be using the Beta. This happened to me when I used the Full version.

Yes. Downloaded full then beta on top. But I had a feeling it didn’t overwrite it. Looking into that now, thanks.
