So should I have done this on my 18 before doing a huge river crossing where I almost sank?

Yea but you can just change the diff oil and you'll be fine. Do the mod so you don't have to do so again lol

Checked my oil and it wasn’t milky and looked perfectly clean and new. Rear end was pressurized though when I removed the fill plug. Also my breather was filled with rocks.

Make sure the new breather you get isn't just a one way, but a two way.

I read every single page of this thread to find out what you just said. Thank you!

And thank you OP for for the details on why to do this mod. After reading every single post, I'm impressed with your patience regarding people continuing to ask the same questions over and over again, that are answered on the very first page.

    Hi Guys,
I know I will find water at some point to cross, and thought this was a great upgrade what was quick and easy.
Parts came in today, so I got under the Tacoma today and replaced the breather in the rear diff, ran the breather hose along the frame and up behind the tail light. 20 minutes later it was completed...Perfect !! Also removed the trailer plug and zip tied it up out of the way for now. Will mount it behind the license plate in the future. Don't want to rip in off since it hasn't happen yet.
Going to Big Bear the weekend to run 3N16 in the snow...Looks easy enough, this will be my 5th time off road...Yep Im the new guy..
thanks for all the info !!
    Don

Finally got this done today after putting it off for a year. Really simple, David K outlined everything you need to know in the very first post and it still holds up!

Is there a better position to put the breather in? Why do some people put it in the tail light, gas door, or bed chubby?

I am very happy that you all found this helpful. My truck is now over nine years old and with 118,000 some miles and the differential is still fine.

The bed cubby was the closest to the diff from my point of view. Easy to drill a hole in. It didn put the tube over the spare tire. I didn't want the breather in gas cap area because of a chance spilled gas getting in during fill ups.

Thanks I called the dealership and told them the prices based off of Amazon and they matched them. It ended up being 17.40$
