Nah. Dont be that guy. It is illegal in most states (if not every) and cops do pull people over if they cant read the plate. I once got a severe lecture from a Texas state trooper because I mounted a clear dust cover on my ex's car, on the premise that "it may be readable now, but it wont be after it yellows over a single year's worth of sitting in hot parking lots."

If you want to black it out, maybe order this plate? Kinda sorry that your state doesnt do just a plain black plate though.

 

Appreciate the feedback, that was basically what i thought about the cover just hate that it’s 100% white almost. yeah I was just looking at the other plates they offer. Might do one that donates to charity that isn’t white. Doesn’t HAVE to be black I guess.

 

I had a tinted plate on my G37, and got stopped because of it. Dick move by the cop...I returned the dick attitude by saying I can remove it right now, and did. Took it off, threw it in the trunk, and asked him if there was anything else I could do for him...SIR.
He was having a bad day, as I stopped at the sign right in front of him, signaled properly for my turn, and took off...he didn't like my acceleration from the stop. dick

I absolutely agree with the second points in the "article" regarding LEO's liking it for radar, profiling and photo ID, as I stated in my post. Increases revenue greatly.

Regarding the first point, I have not seen any convincing data that this is a real issue. How many hit-and-run accidents can there be where there is major vehicular damage--front bumper loss--and yet there is NO OTHER WAY to find the perp other than the front license plate? Sorry, but I am not convinced by the unscientific assertions of "Next with Kyle Clark and Jane Mo, KUSA". I'm not saying it isn't without merit, but this begs the question why do almost half the states not think it's a big enough deal to require it? That should trigger a little skepticism.

I have friends in LEO, I'll run it by them. Til then, sign me "Unconvinced in Nebraska."

 

I also find this conversation a little ironic since I don't think the Tacoma looks bad with a front license. I didn't think twice about mounting a front license.

But for my MX5...I am really glad of the no-front license option.

 

Like I said before. Its voted in state by state. Not every state had the numbers to pass it. Not that hard to understand. Nebraska has like 1/3 the population of Colorado, so it makes sense hit and runs aren't as prevalent. Far less people and a shit ton of rural uninhabited areas. So I can see why the podunk places don't see the need. Fact is it helps. Whether you agree or not.

 

In the interest of fairness, I did a little research. And I came across this website, collecting front license hit-and-run stories. (http://frontplate.org/readup/) And they do list 3 cases there, though one was actually transporting a dead body with different license plates. But there are 2 others that seem legit. Though the first one was tracked by a cellphone, in addition to the lost license. But an N of 2 in 2017, with an estimated 680,000 hit and run cases. I'll give you that.

Study from Texas A&M Transportation and linked from the same website you posted under resources. Denying how it could be beneficial for hit and runs is just ignorant.

 

OK I read the study. I am not convinced main author Melissa Walden PhD actually exists, because according to Mr. Google there are no other publications by this author. In any event, the report doesn’t actually reference any data on hit and run. It just makes a blanket assertion that a front plate might “potentially” help in a HAR accident. OTOH, it goes into great detail about the economic benefits of a FLP for the state, with toll roads and speed enforcement—points I noted in my original post.

Notice I did not say it never helps in a HAR accident, just that such cases were exceedingly rare, and any sensible person would not use this as a justification for a FLP policy.

We don’t have toll roads in NE, and I can see the benefit in CO with their toll roads, and of course the kids high from the legal pot—lots of opportunities for LEO interactions and $$$ for the state. I don’t hold it against CO—love CO, 2 of my kids and my sister and BIL live there.

But to be honest, I have done some research in my day, and to boot I am getting older and more crotchety, and I just like a little data to go along with someone’s opinion. Again, don’t take it personally. I could change my mind with the right information.

 

Wow, the study is a resource from a website you linked as backing up your "evidence" or reports Denial is real. So info from that site is only correct when you reference it. How can you trust the info you're relying on when they have fake (according to you) studies?

And yes, I require data. As should all reasonable people.

 

Required in here in California, but only used by parking enforcement to rack up tickets for the City... Never had a police officer say anything to me about it.

i say leave it off if you are in TN. Its not like it looks cool or will add HP to your truck.

 

Ok it is like asking for "data" on how many people can be saved from DUI check points. Or because "data" isn't available you question it. Impossible to gauge and same type of argument. Not believing they could save lives or be beneficial because there is no "data" is ignorant. Common sense should prevail. That is all.
