Yeah I believe Toyota lost money on that motor. I remember the commercials for it lasting 1 million miles!
My dad had an ‘87 T4R with a rag. I was in college and his clutch went at 170k on the beach. Backed it off the beach and ended up driving that baby 300 miles home. Clutch was completely smooth. They wanted to use him in a commercial but wouldn’t do anything for him! In ‘96 he was offered even pinks for a new T4R and told the dealer his top doesn’t pop, no deal! That T4R was last seen by me 2years ago! Made it 30years old and still going.
Yeah, that 2.2L was a beast and pulled out my uncle’s dually loaded with wood and a trailer!

    X2.

Rotaries were great engines....temporarily. They started burning oil and losing power after relatively short mileages compared to a regular piston engine and needed a rebuild. I had a buddy that ran an old wankel in his racing car back in the early 2000's and he got really good at replacing apex seals.

1.3l that can make that power. Name another motor that small that can do what a rotary can.

I remember back in the day the performance mod for a 22R motor was installing a 20R cyl head . The 20R cyl head flowed more air and allowed the 22R to make more hp

No argument from me on that. The new ones are nice and tight, but for the technology of the day, the old ones were pretty darn good.

I remember fondly... 350 minus two cylinders IF I remember correctly.
Same bore/stroke. I think even the cam lobes/profile were the same or similar

Yup, had a buddy with one. One minute he was running sport bikes and the next minute he would lose to a 4th gen Camaro V6.

Ooohhhhh, that sweet sweet sound of a v4. I remember seeing one of those Scats in a sand rail. A V4 with 180* firing order (crank, not cylinder number) is like a symphony to me
Not sure of Scats firing order

That's what I have in my 4Runner right now. I've never had a 22R/RE that didn't go over 300K miles. MPG is always above 20. Taken care of they are very reliable. Much more than most will give credit. Power isn't everything for everyone.

The Subaru 6-cylinder engines seem to be invincible. Not the fastest motors out there, but they seem to run forever. Unfortunately they're not super common and I've heard that the crankshaft and firing geometry don't lend theirselves to tuning and forced induction.

I would absolutely love to do up a Subaru flat-6 1st-gen Tacoma one day, though.

One of the most beautiful engines ever put in a factory car courtesy of Yamaha

And amazing power for its day.

My son has a 1991 SHO that he is restoring and it still runs quite good for a near 30 year old 5 speed 4 door sedan.
