So those of you in the NEBS thread already saw this, but I started the process of converting my lawn to clover the other day. No special prep, just overseeded a bunch of Dutch White seeds into the existing grass (which hasn't really started poking thru yet, so the clover should have time to get a toehold) before it started raining. I've been doing some reading on it over the winter and it seems like a good alternative to grass, for me, since I don't have a lot of traffic in the front yard because of the garden.

I was surprised to see 3 avocado trees coming back in the garden from last year. I thought for sure the winter would kill them. We took 4 of the best ones and moved them inside figuring the others would get the axe. Strong little buggers I suppose.

Supposedly not, according to the manufacturer, but I've seen some studies that have shown that even though it's considered 'low' toxicity to worms, 'low' means that it kills fewer than 25% of the worm population.

The bigger downside is that the worms that it doesn't kill still absorb the toxin, so anything that eats them (or any of the bugs that it kills) picks up the toxin too. So the local bird population may suffer. Plus it's crazy toxic to fish, so if you're anywhere that it could get into a lake/stream/river then there'll be a high impact there too.

Personally, I'm largely against 'carpet bombing' with pesticides/herbicides of any sort if you can avoid it. I avoid them like the plague and will only use them in small, localized doses if there's no other option.

    YMMV

Been there, done that. I cheated and used a tractor bucket, though, because I'm lazy

One of the first things I did when we bought our house was find a tractor on Craigslist. Nothing huge, just a little 17 horse Kubota. The first year that we were there I used the hell out of it, too. Everything from stripping the overgrowth from out back and over the septic system (the PO was elderly and the entire yard had been taken over by Alders; we visited the property twice before I found the well because they were so thick), cutting and scraping the sod from the front yard for the garden beds, filling the beds with topsoil and manure (mixing the two piles went a lot faster with the tractor too) and spread a fresh layer of gravel onto the driveway. In addition to 1000 other random tasks that it made a LOT easier. If you've got more than an acre or two, a tractor with a loader is practically a must-have.

When my wife and I move north a garden is a must. So goes the need for such machinery, tillers and the like. A greenhouse too. Gonna post pics of my boxes later. Soil is really good a and a great growing medium. Compost is a perfect mix of ground organic material and such

I have been thinking about trellis ideas for cukes, squash, pole green beans, etc. I like what you did with the metal fence posts. Here's my new(ish) bed. What would you guys do? Maybe just attach the wire to the existing metal fence posts somehow?

Progress report. Almost have everything in ground with roots down. Snap peas are sprouting. Gave the herb garden a haircut yesterday.

I’ve got the (I think hog panel) panel zip tied to the posts.
