It will definitely help. It probably wont fix every scenario, but in most cases, you'll notice a substantial difference in downshifts and load required to keep the truck in an appropriate gear.

I can't imagine what this truck was like in the mountains before OVTune. I just moved from the Midwest to the San Francisco area and even with base 91, the truck struggles and goes from 5th to 3rd on some of these hills when 4th is all that's needed. I know this will be worked out with 2.0 though. The tune is leaps and bounds better than stock but it doesn't completely remove the issues. Sounding like 2.0 will get us most of the way there however!

The i-280 / hwy1 area is where I've noticed it the most when trying to maintain speed up the grade. In the Midwest with small hills the tune made a big difference in maintaining speed in 5th but out here 4th is needed more often at highway speeds on the hills and the drop to 3rd instead of 4th is a bummer.

It's less than desirable I can tell you that. I used to enjoy driving to/from mountain destinations, but as of late it's just painful with the Tacoma. Ah well, looking forward to an improved experience.

Be happy you didn’t have one if the early trucks. Mine only saw 6th gear downhill. It was almost always in 4th

What is the general consensus on dropping tire size for better gearing? I am at a 245/65R16 but something like a 265/60R16 would drop the dia 2" or 245/60R16 for just a 1"drop. I know folks tend to lift and go big but I'm just a light camping and diy truck user (LB FTW!). I don't have a need to hurl myself up into the cab nor fall out and break a hip as I push into my mid-life...no...I want a great running Tacoma (read as Race truck). No, I don't wanna lower it nor change it's practically. Just make a tire upgrade that considers all the options for performance I want.

Anyone reduce their tire size w/OVT and have some opinion on the downsize?

Because the Toyota fan base will buy them without regard to anything Toyota does OR doesn't do or have. Toyota has its market hypnotized.

    Reliability Reliability Resale resale resale

Toyota can leave anything out and deliver mediocre trucks to their adoring fan base...They still use drum brakes for sakes.

Drum brakes have never once been a problem for me. I’ve warped plenty of disc rotors or had them seize up. Sure disc are “better” but there’s minimal stopping power in the rear anyway... I don’t see how it benefits me other than being a checkbox for marketing.

They are perfectly adequate for our trucks. They are also, however, a pain in the ass to work on compared to disc brakes.

I warped mine. Once they have a slight out of round they generate excessive heat causing more warping :(

You made my point..Rationalizing 50+-year-old technology.....Face it Tacoma can do no wrong.

Disc brakes are also 50+ year old technology? What’s your point?

And you care so much why? There is nothing inherently wrong with using drum brakes. There is a good reason big trucks still use them.

Name me another mid size truck that uses drum brakes.......Face it it is tired and old technology. Disc brakes are used because they are better.

I had four Tacomas and never did I drink the Tacoma Kool-Aid,

The 2016 was terrible and my last Tacoma Maybe the 2022 will be the magical up to date truck. Yeah, I bought the Ford because Tacoma is too old in the tooth and I refuse to pay $40K for a lesser truck.

Many here make excuses for the Tacoma and rationalize But But Reliability...But Resale...Not worth driving an old truck

Tacoma owners HAVE to tune their engines to obtain even mediocre power advances.

Ranger has up to date features and options. Power locking tailgate ....Tacoma only recently even put locks on the tailgate. Ranger kicks Tacoma ass in power and torque and HP and does it with a tried and tested 4 cylinder!!

Ranger has up to date technology, Much Better (power) seats and a whole host of power options not to mention the interior tech,
Toyota is stuck in the past with their 6-speed "hunting without a license" transmission and horrible sewing machine engine.

What we have is someone complaining about Toyota saying everyone who buys one is hypnotized by reliability and resale and is short changing their customers in the innovation area. Yet this very same person says they only keep a vehicle 3 or 4 years. So you are faulting a company that doesn't make what you want and their main selling point is something you don't even need or use? Why even care about reliability if you are going to dump the thing in 3 or 4 years. Go buy what has all the fancy stuff you want and sell it before it breaks. Thats what you have said you do in other threads.

What this really means is Toyota is not for you, other brands are for you. You can't be mad at something for what it is or is perceived to be. You basically want a Toyota to be a Ford or something. Its not. It just isn't.

I guess you could want Toyota to be innovative and reliable. But if you dump the thing every few years, reliability is not a factor anyway.

Yes, and....? Again, they are perfectly adequate. Why do we *NEED* disc brakes?

I don't care about reliability. I don't keep vehicles that long. I fault Toyota for putting out junk in 2016. People are still dealing with all to common issues and this thread is more than ample proof the stock Tacoma is a dog

I want Toyota to be innovative and step up to 2019. But They know their fan base will buy whatever they put out despite the old tech and drivetrain. It's a cash cow for Toyota, I get it,
