We're looking at possible destinations to start a new chapter of our lives. The Reno area is one of them. :crapstorm:

A couple of questions I'd like your perspectives on.

What's your perspective/experience with renting/mortgages? Any tips on where not to live would also be helpful. Ultimately, how do you feel about Reno? Do you feel fulfilled there? And are you happy to say you live there? Other recommendations about absolutely anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I just moved here 2 months ago from Richmond, VA, originally from Savannah, GA. I really like it so far. There is a laid back genuineness to the folks I've met, and that's coming from someone who spent their whole life in the South. There aren't typical socioeconomic groupings in Reno, so there aren't specific areas to avoid, maybe just a couple blocks here or there. I work at a homeless outreach program and I'm always surprised at the close proximity of high-end houses to the spots my peeps frequent. I moved to NW because I had the same concern, and its definitely a nice area. I moved to the area for a good job, so I don't have an issue, but I have heard that it can be hard to find a job that is keeping up with the cost of living increases. Rents still seem to be cheaper than mortgages, so I'm holding off buying for now. I might think differently if I had more than just me to think about. I'm glad I moved, for sure.

I asked pretty much the same things on page 447 of this thread, so you may want to review what folks said there. NVNV posted this map there too, which is pretty accurate.

Thanks @RelentlessFab for the recommendation. Alex did a great job, two day turn around (even though they're in the middle of moving the shop) and reasonable rates.

Where do you live now? If you like the outdoors then Reno is legit. It’s grown a ton in the last few years, which has been good and bad. Housing prices and rent has skyrocketed, although it seems to be stabilizing a bit now.

    Too late. ;)

We moved up into the Wingfield Springs area of Sparks. Nice newer area and it’s tucked away but not nice getting to the highway every time we want/need to with traffic. Most everything we need is a 15min drive at most though. Same could be said about commuting from the north valleys area. Many opt for west Reno or south Reno. If feeling really brave, Fern-Tucky is a bit more reasonably priced but a ways from the city (30-40min depending on your speed)

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
We (wife, 2 kids) moved a few months ago and love it.

We bought, so can't comment on renting and don't have much of a mortgage.

The only thing I don't like is there are too many liberal a&&tards in Reno (1 is too many in my book, though). There should be an active program to deport them to the western border.

Vast majority of people are polite, well-mannered, and overall decent folks.

Life-long natives are sometimes DH's to transplants - their loss. I grew up more redneck than they could ever hope to be - riding horses, killing dinner, slaying fish, and generally expecting government to leave me the hell alone - hence the reason I came here.

I recommend it 100% Also: more guns. Nice to walk into the shop, plunk down money and a CCW, fill out the 4473, and walk out the door with new toys.
