Mat stated the limit is no higher than the Camry sees (same engine) and this is what accounts for the "difference" in HP between the two. Essentially, the truck was electronically neutered through its rev limiter. Definitely not a safety / reliability issue or something to be concerned with.

I figured this engine in other applications had higher factory rev limits. Was wondering why they kept it lower. Probably some dumb reason.

I also just did a google search of a 2018 Camry tachometer image. Hard to see but looks like it has the same 8k end point but red line starts around 6800 which makes sense with what Mat has done.

Got the kit and flashed it earlier today. Went straight for a 91 performance tune. Great cruise in an automatic on a mountain highway. Also did a speed test on the straight, there was a number that appears on the screen, wink wink, it was about to pass 110, so I ease it down.

Not sure if it was me but as it reaches 6800rpm, it felt like a loss of power at the tip of 6800. Gotta try it again to verify. I only went 60 miles on the tune.

If I take my truck for a service at Toyota dealer right now, you would have to be a massive idiot to not notice that there's something off about this Tacoma. lol!

Overall, I love it. Great buy. Next up, 5.29 nitro gear.

Hey Matt, there's no reason why they can't use the V35A-FTS engine on the 4th gen Taco right?

So I got my tune about a month ago. Flashed to 91 performance. It was really jumpy with a lot of tip-in, but I figured I would give it a couple hundred miles and see if I liked it. Life happened and I moved and had to get busy doing life stuff to pay the bills. I finally had a day off two days ago and, while I had gotten used to the touchy throttle of the 91 perf tune, and it was better than stock, I was never really happy with it.
So from following this thread for a while I know a lot of people like the 87 base, and I tried it. What a difference!
It was smooth acceleration, with predictable throttle response. I mean night and day! So I decided to flash to the 91 base. OMG i found my sweet spot! Totally smooth power that is predictable and responsive. And if I step on the throttle my truck is straight flying down the road. My truck is badass all the sudden and I just love driving it! It feels sooooo good. This IS how this truck should have been off the dealer lot, but thank you OVT for getting it there now. Totally worth every penny!!! Again, I really love driving my truck after flashing! It really is like a different vehicle!

I’m a new user. Just loaded the 87 base a few days ago. What a difference in drivability. It no longer drives like the hand brake is on. I’m very pleased.

Interesting. I just did 87 base to 87 performance and haven’t worked up to the 91s yet. But it sounds like 91 base is substantially different than 87 base?

I found them to be very similar, but 91 seems to have just a little more oomph at low RPMs. If I'm cruising and I need a little power, a small step on the accelerator and I'm off. I think they re both similar, but 91 just has a little more power. I put 91 octane in my truck so Im gonna use the 91 tune. I think 91 octane is what 1.05 originally called for so I'm gonna stick with it. They're both great tunes though.

I may go back to base. Still not sure how I feel about the raised rev limiter on perf.

Put your money where your mouth is and tell us. Otherwise, I'm just taking that as more hype from the hype master. Who the hell is going to wait another 7 or 8 years for a decent engine/transmission option anyway?

Does anyone run the OV tune with 4.88’s or 5.29’s? Wondering how it drives. I am getting 5.29’s and eventually wanna do the tune as well.

The performance tune was just too jumpy for me. Almost a head snap if you hadn't driven it before. And the perf flash on the highway proved to be pretty frustrating for a family member. I guess its good if you like stomping on the accelerator all the time, but I dont. I like smooth driving with plenty of instant power when I need it. I get that this is a sporty engine that likes to rev, and I'm ok with that, but my deal was a balanced driving experience. This engine does really good at high RPMs, but it also does well down low. The 91 base tune lets that out IMHO.

I read somewhere that member had this done and said it was the icing on the cake. Im considering this as well. 5.29s on 33s though with added weight.

Super late noob Question. So having the OV tune, I can go from 87 base to 91 base? seems like the 91 base is the place to be right now for us stockies? lol

    He's not going to say.

I'd rather know HOW he knows.. maybe that wouldn't violate a NDA?

Meh, I'm just in line waiting for the new M/T torque map. It's supposed to address a bunch of stuff.
