On a side note, given the PO putting a janky piece of tape (shitbag move if you ask me) I’d bet the coax is still sitting right under it depending on what sort of setup was run. Most opt for a blind hole NMO so it gets fed in from the outside so you don’t have to pull headliner.

@pca501212 I think you should just get a HAM license, reinstall a antenna and radio and have added capability in your truck. What''s one more hobby TW can act as a gateway for to ruin your finances? :D

Yeah it's kind of shitty, but I can't complain cause it's still my fault for not catching it prior to purchase. It's a lesson learned, but compared to some other stuff I see in the thread like people purchasing used Tacomas with frames on the brink of turning to dust, this is a cake walk. At the end of the day, I'm not butthurt that there's a hole, I just want to make sure the hole is 100% water sealed. I checked under the tape and it doesn't seem to have a coax, or any associated accessories. Just bare.

You know I didn't even know this was a thing till it was mentioned in this thread! Now I'm reading up on it and it's gaining my interest. I will definitely look into this more on my free time.

To me it hasn't ever seemed worth the effort to pull the NMO bases out. But I've only sold one truck with them and gave my buddy the option of leaving them or plugging them. Most of us are hams in the club anyway and I even left a radio in the truck for him.

You can always install the gear and then have motivation to get the license so you can use it!

Do not weld this. Use an appropriate sized plug and sealer as mentioned previously. You put a welder to this and the surrounding paint is going to go snap crackle and pop and you are going to have a bigger issue.

Can I still be part of the HAM club with a faux antenna and I keep a pair of these in the glovebox? I'll start my own Junior HAM club.

Lol you can actually get a midland micro mobile radio and communicate with these. The first time I fired mine up (bought it really for GMRS) I heard some kids on their Barbie Walkie talkies, since FRS bands are included

Bare as in a hole you can see the headliner, or bare as I I see ...

    20190426_102222.jpg

Since I leave the antenna off most the time.. I use this cap to seal and protect the mount.

If you just tape it up again, the next buyer may not be as forgiving as you. So take your chances and disclose it when you sell it, or fix it properly and maintain the high value these trucks are known for.

Exactly. Not a chance I would have this welded. Not worth the added risk, time, money, and effort IMO. A high quality RTV silicone will last a very very long time. Get one of those plugs, apply a bit of silicone, pop it in and call it a day.

EDIT: A quick google search will go a long way. https://www.google.com/search?q=plu...i59l2j69i57.3095j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Also, might be worth asking what others have done in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/amateur-ham-radio-bs-and-callsign-thread.260643/

Did you buy that from a dealer? I'd try to get them to assist with the repair, due to their (assumed) failure to disclose damage. Texas AG's website has an online dealership complaint form as well, if they tell you to pound sand.
