I'm not a fan of Facebook. I was in the group of college originals that started using it back in 2003, but I've just grown tired of it.

I honestly can't recommend jumping your truck. The wheel bearings in these things are notoriously weak. Replacing them can be fairly easy if you know what you are doing (Think $150 per side), but expect a shop to charge a decent amount (guessing closer to $600-900 per side depending on shop). Not to mention the stress put on the frame and other components.

    ...and the safety risks associated...

If, however, you are dead set on jumping it, you'll want to go LT (or Long Travel). This includes rebuilding your CV axles with 2" longer shafts, extended bumpstops, new upper and lower control arms, shocks and springs, and that's just up front. You'll want an aftermarket leaf pack, bumpstops and extended shocks in the rear as well. Oh, and don't forget about the extended brake lines. I don't know what all of that would cost, but I know it's more than it's worth in Pensacola (I'm guessing about $5-7k). Oh, and from what I understand, LT is terrible to drive on the highway.

For doing it "right" and on a budget, I would honestly recommend OME 885 springs and Bilstein 5100s. I spent a lot of money on my suspension only to be mad at how good my buddy's truck drove with that setup. It's firm enough that you don't have a lot of body roll in turns, but soft enough that you don't feel every crack in the road. For the rear suspension, I'd recommend the OME Dakar leaf pack (though fair warning, they are known to squeak) and 5100s. www.headstrongoffroad.com is probably your best bet there. They also happen to be a vendor here. You can always email Marie for a quote on everything. This setup should give you about 2-2.5" up front and about 1-1.5" in the back. It'll give your truck a good stance and allow for some larger tires if you like. It also won't be so crazy high that you have to change other components like UCAs (Think $500-900 cost). Your truck will be very capable off-road (assuming 4wd) and very comfortable on road.

The leaf pack will cost about $500 by itself. If that's too much, you can get an AAL (Add-a-leaf) for around $80. However, the AAL requires removal and disassembly of the original pack (which might already be worn out) and can be pretty cumbersome. I originally went with an AAL and later upgraded to the full leaf pack. I could have save $80 and a few hours of time had I done it right the first time.

For the above recommended setup, you're probably looking at around $1000-1300 plus install.

If that's still too much, you can simply get the Bilstein 5100s up front and adjust them to preload the front suspension. IIRC, settings are 0", .85", 1.25" and 2.5." The higher you adjust, the more pre-load, and thus stress, you are putting on the front suspension.

The install can be done in a few hours with basic tools: 12mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm and 21mm sockets; 2 crescent wrenches, and a torque wrench. Of course, you'll also need a jack and jack stands. If you aren't comfortable doing it, shop around to get quotes from local shops. I have a friend who runs 850fab out near Pine Forest. He's been getting more into the fabrication side of things, but still does work on cars and trucks. When I had a previous vehicle lowered, V&T Performance was the least expensive shop I found. This was quite a while ago though, and I knew some of the folks working there. So definitely shop around.

Of course, all of this is subjective. I can only speak from my own experience. What feels right to me might not be what feels right to you.

What year is your truck? How many miles? 2 or 4wd? Regular, Extended or Double Cab? Those will all become factors in your final decision.

Wow. This has been the most info I have gotten so far. Definitely appreciate it. Might reconsider jumping until I get something that works a little more for that. Kinda didn’t think about how much more stress it would put on an extended bed let alone a normal one. Screenshotting what you just sent me!!!

    best wheel bearings around! www.marionbumper2bumper.com

Actually wheel bearings are quite strong and hold up much better over ball joints and tie rods when jumping.
Great info on lift kit information!

LOL. I will agree that ball joints and tie rods are another very likely source of problems.

Aren't you one of the guys who makes the pre-assembled hub/wheel bearing combos? I'd think that you would know as well, or better, than anyone how prone the wheel bearings are to failure on these trucks.

Also, @BamaToy1997 , welcome back? I haven't seen you post in YEARS! ...but maybe I've just been in the wrong threads. I always trusted your mechanical knowledge.

SO! I’m a little scatter brained. Just found out The guy I bought my truck from gave me 5100’s but they were in a different box so I didn’t think anything of it. I believe I’m going to try the set up that you have listed as well as a few other things since I already have the 5100’s now. I looked up those 885’s also which actually will work very well with my truck. Thankyou so much for all the info! Might go see your buddy here soon at 850fab!

Definitely think the leaf springs I have on it are already squeaking so I’ll have to figure that out -____-

That's awesome! Something else, you'll want the Toytec Sway Bar Relocate bracket. Should cost about $30 and will push your swaybar forward so that it doesn't make contact with the larger diameter springs. You'll get a funny look, but tell him that "Panda" sent you. He'll know who you're talking about.

What leaf springs do you have? Could also be the bushings.

How many miles do you have?

Post a pic when you get a chance.

Try blasting them out with the pressure washer at one of those quarter car washes. Once they dry, hit them with some kind of oil. I can't remember what most recommend. I want to say motorcycle chain oil, but can't remember. There is an entire thread on here about it that was started by OZ-T. You can also put some EDPM (I hope those are the right letters) Pond Liner between the tip of the leafs and the point of contact on the leaf above and that supposedly stops the squeak for a pretty decent amount of time.

I get off around 7 so when I get home I’ll take a picture! And I will try that also... and I need to look at those threads for sure. I really want to say that’s what it is but we’ll see I guess.

Hey Pensacola peeps! I’ll be taking my annual trip to Pensacola from Oct. 18-25th (this will be the first year I’m taking the Tacoma down)! Are there any good spots to take my truck for some decent trails? Thanks!
