Do I really need to be rebuilding Icons?

So I just purchased some used Icon 2.0 Aluminums. Then I started hearing about some rebuilding and IDK what else. My question is, are these like those dang UCAs that need the ball joint replaced every 20K miles? Do I need to rebuild these Icon 2.0s every year? I read that you gotta rebuild em every 20-30K miles and that about as much as I drive per year. If so then does anybody wanna buy my Icons 2.0 Aluminums?

So I can't comment on Icon's, but I will say that a few manufacturer's recommend rebuilding shocks every 50k miles (if on-road only) or in as little as 20-25k miles (if mainly used off-road).

    YMMV

I'd weigh out what it costs to rebuild them and what you've spent for them vs new ones. Not knowing anything about the Icon's, I'm sure you can make changes during rebuild...maybe get them done for your specific needs?

I dont know about Icons, but my FOXs have 43K and only 1 has just started to seep now. Good luck with them.

This sucks. Just like with balljoint UCAs. Im trying to upgrade not down grade. This is a Tacoma, I got it because aslong as you maintain them hey dont break down every few thousand miles. If you have to be replacing the ball joint or rebuilding then you dont really have that great of a product, atleast not for outside of racing.

Hate to say this but, when you start doing things outside of what the general population does with their vehicle, things will begin to break and require maintenance more often.

I used to drag my Corvette and WS6 years back; still have one of the Corvettes but I've gone through more rear ends, transmissions, etc. than I would've liked to and more than I have versus other vehicles that I've never drag raced.

I just spent $2k+ on Fox suspension for the Tacoma; not necessarily cause I needed to, $200 Monroe shocks would've done the job, but I intend to drive the Taco through rough terrain/off trails and dispersed camping. Had the truck been assigned to strict on-road duty only, the O'reilly/Autozone shocks would've done just fine.

Well, my offroad tacoma was meant for offroading and reliability, regardless of whether or not the general population only "Mall crawls." You would expect a high end suspension to outlast the stock suspension. I originally thought shock rebuilding was when you blow them out you can repair them, not "oh shit this "high end" suspension needs to be fixed a couple times a year" if I wanted that I would have bought a ford.

I’ve got about 60k on my Icons. No issues and and I don’t see any reason to rebuild them until they leak.

It's just recommended by the manufacturer. Your actual mileage may vary.

I'm expecting 20-40k out of my Fox setup once it's installed and I start driving it. If I get more, I'll be stoked, if I get less, oh well but at least they can be rebuilt.

I dont know "fixed" is an appropriate term. It's not necessarily that they break and need repair but shocks are obviously wear parts and harder use will wear any part more, stock or aftermarket. Do you HAVE to rebuild them that frequently? Maybe not. Does the manufacturer recommend it for safe and optimal performance? Yes. No shock is a lifetime part.

Yes! Icon recommends for hwy use only rebuilds every 35k...for dirt and hwy use 25k for dirt use only 15k. Rebuilding is not terribly difficult and a good skill to have. If you want to put racing style shocks on your vehicle they require racing style maintenance.

You're right, they're a wear and tear part, but I drove my stock O/R suspension for 60K miles with lots of bouncing off road and they never had to be rebuilt. Why would a "better" prodict have to be rebuilt every 30K miles? its just absurd. If its a simple manufacturer recommendation then ok, but if I have to be doing it every 50K on road then thats BS.

Better than suspension that is a one off. $26 for new seals is a pretty good deal lol

Umm stock shocks are not going to last as long as offroad performance shocks....

You could NEVER rebuild them if you wanted to.

Your confused on what they are better at my man.
They make no claims of being a more reliable shock or better on the road then OEM.
They are better at dampening whoops, bumps etc, they were never meant to be on road really, there providing a product that has been requested.

That's like comparing an alcohol blown drag race motor to OEM, it's good at making power. Not high milage.
I understand the thinking that it cost more it should last more. But there simply designed for performance. Nothing more.
