Question

I have a chance to get a used stock 2018 TRD OR suspension Bilstein 4600 and leaf pack. I now have a2018 SR5 with Hitachi shocks and stock leaf pack. #1 I’m looking for better handling and less body roll will that OR suspension be better than what I have now or would I be better off doing a 2-1 lift with 5100s. also are the rear leafs the same in the OR and my SR5 or stiffer. Thanks for any input

 

The leafs are the same but the OR shocks are pretty soft. So it may be worse.

 

Man my Hitachi are pretty dam soft and a lot of body roll. I would think the 4600s would have to be an improvement

 

Once you start changing up your suspension you will wish you got something better.
Do you plan on spending lots of time in the bush, mountains ?

 

No street queen just looking for better handling and less body roll. probably looking to do a 2-1 lift with 5100 and 265-75-16 will those fit with out rubbing?

 

I got the 650lb coils with my Billies. Helps significantly with body roll. I’m running a winch, IFS and trans skids, plus sliders so 350 lbs added weight, a lot of that up front.

 

Is the SR5 suspension the same as the Sport? I find The ride on my Sport very firm.

 

IDK but mines pretty soft and a lot of body roll. Maybe it feels that way to me because I have always had Bilstein on all my trucks in the past

 

SR/limited hitachis are the softest OEM.

 

I had an SR5 and pretty much liked how it handled (swaybar is same as pro). I have an OR and it is VERY mushy. I moved to Sport coilovers and shocks (I think the leaf packs are the same). It has definitely tightened up things. I'm not sure what the change would be SR5 to Sport, but it may be worth looking into. At that point though, you may want to start talking with a vendor about offerings/solutions more specifically addressed to your needs/wants.

 

The Sport sway bar is stiff as shit. I looked once and found there were three SB part numbers for the 3rd Gen.

If you want to kill body roll, get a Sport sway bar. But be prepared because any uneven bump (potholes, driveway curbs, and such) will be a new experience. I liked the handling on smooth roads, but anything else was pretty much unacceptable.

I like stiff cars. The problem that I had with the Taco is the height. Instead of a little bump that you'd feel in a tight car, it was a big side-to-side jounce in the Taco.

If you have smooth roads, give it a shot. It takes no time to swap.

 

Do you know if the Sport, SR and SR5 sway bars are the same?

I cannot remember for sure, but I think the Sport has its own? Something like SR / SR5 / Limited have third own SB. OR / Pro have their own. And, Sport. Mix and match that with the two spring stiffnesses and I think those are the 3rd Gen combos?

I should give this a go, I find my sport pretty harsh. I live on a dirt road and it’s a slow slow ride out. So swapping the sway bar to an OR one might help this? Would I still be fine with the sport shocks?

 

I have a sport and originally changed the suspension out to the OR suspension. The ride was soft and there was more roll when turning. My truck started making some squeaking sounds in the front end so i brought it in to Toyota thinking it was the body mounts. They told me it was the Coilovers so they replaced them. I assumed they were going to replace them with the same ones off the OR, but put the original Hitachi’s back on. Now that i have the Originals back, i like it much better then the OR Bilsteins. Feels like i have better control of the truck in turns and it feels firmer and not as squishy. I guess that is how the “Sport” is supposed to feel like. If i were to replace them again, I would probably go with the 5100.

 

I don't. It is big though. Probably over an inch. I will be in the crawlspace tonight and can measure it for you?

 

700lb springs are the stock springs (supposedly), its the shock that make the soft ride, not the coils. The 5100s or even 6112's would probably stiffen up the ride with the stock coils. Progressive vs digressive valving will make a different ride.
In short, big bumps and obstacles going a little slower <25mph one would likely prefer Digressive. Going faster>25-40mpg on trails and such likely Progressive is a better choice. Hybrids of both valving do exist
