Want to convince the wife to let me have a bike.

To get all the bs out of the way. Ok I'm wiped what ever. But my dad is about to get one I have a few friends that have one or a few. I found a few Honda Magnas that I like cheep. And yes I did start a new job 3 weeks ago. Buy I'm only looking to spend 3k tops. Any pointers. And seperating is not an option.

If your wife even enjoys riding is a deciding factor........doubt she'll support an expensive & "dangerous" hobby if it's something that she has no joy in sharing with you -- but it's your wife and up to you on the most tactful way of explaining yourself to her that manipulates her decision towards your wishes.........I got lucky and said something about getting one again, and my wife said Sure!! So it only took me a week to find what I wanted, bought it, and had it in my posession.
If you can ride a bike, are already licensed, and have a GOOD buddy that may lend you a bike - take her for a spin to entice her into it -

 

Does the budget support it?? If you aren't going to have to skimp on something else and you understand that she deserves something too...Make it a qid pro quo.

My wife loves going riding with me- so it's a great relationship thing- but if yours doesn't want to ride...that makes it hard. You are a grown up tho- Just talk it out with her.

True enough. Divorce the right woman and you'll never have enough to get anything you want. (trust me on this one.)

To the question at hand- unfortunately, if she's not comfortable with thinking of you on a bike she probably won't change her mind. Some people are just that way.

 

You need to understand what her problems with riding are first, then you can work up some counterpoints to it. Be aware though, that safety is not something you'll be able to argue your way out of,,, realistically. MC riders are more exposed and more prone to injury/death in an accident. But, I find that I ride with alot more awareness of drivers and what's going on around me than when I drive. I think you'll find that the majority of other intelligent riders will say the same.

BTW, good choice on bikes. I bought an 02 Magna 4 years ago and am still riding it. Great 1-up bike, can be setup for reasonable 1-up touring. 2-up is probably best left for short rides, or small passengers. The V4 power in a small (500lb) package is also a bit addicting, it hangs with 1300-1800 V-twins quite well. I bought the Magna after about a 15 year hiatus from riding. Good thing about the area is you can ride year around.

buy one of those shirts that says "if you can read this, the b**** fell off" and wear it around for a few days. this wont do anything but aggravate her. eventually when she starts getting super pissed, tell her you will stop wearing the shirt if you can get a motorcycle.
if she still doenst agree, grow a handlebar mustache in addition to wearing the shirt. keep upping the ante like this and eventually she will be so fed up that she will have to say "yes its ok". being obnoxious is key. most wives do not like being annoyed to such a degree and she will likely fold under the stress.

x2 especially if you get an older one like the old v45/v65 series. ive had 3. v45 magna, v45 sabre, and v45 intercepter. And my uncle had a v65 magna(vmax killer). Ive worked on them all.

 

Asking a someone to change their view on bikes is like trying to convince a democrat that republicans are right and vice versa.

 

Eh, not entirely true, it can happen, just takes a lot of time and the right approach. For instance, it took my dad about 20 years to convince my mom to let him get a bike, and believe me he tried!

Then I went out and bought mine a year after him, so needless to say neither of them were happy But, I made a deal with them to take the motorcycle safety course and I got to keep it.

P.S. Might want to mention the course to your wife, it might put her more at ease with you having a bike. It's a great course and you'll learn a lot about riding.

 

That's kind of what I was trying to get out of the OP when I asked what her problems were with riding. Big range there.

OP: "Honey, I was thinking about buying a bike, what do you think about that?"

Possible answers:
1) She's never been asked, so don't really know.
2) Not dead set against, "Oh, I'm not sure that's such a good idea."
3) Pretty much against, "Go ahead, you can ride it to meetings with your divorce lawyer."
4) Worst case, "Do whatever the f^&* you like,,, you ever heard of Lorena Bobbitt?"
