I doubt it’s a suspension. They just won’t assign them any further games in the post season. This happens all the time especially as the rounds go on. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, as the playoffs go on fewer officials are needed and only the guys the league wants to keep officiating that year get games. In the end the effect is the same except since NHL officials are salary and the playoffs are bonus, they won’t get anymore bonus but they’ll still get their weekly rate of pay.

True, but O'Halloran hasn't missed a conference final in over a decade and this year he is done after round one. I don't think the refs intended to blow the call but it happened. It really is too bad they couldn't have the option of checking a replay to see what happened when they are unsure.

I’m really on the fence about reviewing penalties. I mean injuries happen on legal plays. Does this mean the NHL is willing to move to the international rules where the apparent extent of an injury dictates the call or will it be a new set of rules, because just my opinion but the current rule book really isn’t crystal clear enough for review situations on when a major should be called. If a play is reviewable the opinion of the referee should not be the major consideration.

Remember offside reviews started because a Kings player was 20 feet offside on a goal that determined the outcome of a playoff game. Now we have goals being ruled off because of a skate possibly not being on the line in games that have multi goal leads. It’s a slippery slope.

I think if they are going to hand out a 5 or a game kind of thing the ref on his own decision can take a look quickly at the play. Just my opinion though

Clarify it in the rule book then. Honestly you’re simply adding more to the referees discretion in a way without changing the rule book if a huddle makes the determination. I’m not against a challenge or review but the rulebook must be clearer on major penalties because right now you’re still going to have close plays, or worse, plays that a particularly referee finds offensive causing objectionable calls.

Or just hand it off to Toronto or New York and the war room. Honestly that’s always the best answer in my opinion. Then you better be ready though for some real weird feeling calls.

Canes vs Islanders. I would rather watch preseason hockey. Has to be a nightmare for the NHL

Agreed. But the Avs had a big break. Hopefully the Avs will pick it up like they did against Calgary
