?

Will 285/70R17 need a CMC with a 3" lift?

Question Up Front: Plan is to install a 2.5-3" lift, and run 285/70R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers or BFG KO2s.

1.) Do I require a CMC or just minor plastic trimming?
3.) Is $800 a solid price for install & CMC?

More Details: I am complete novice. I'm sure there are threads that address this exact situation, but I keep getting lost in the TW forest.

I took this to two different shops (I'll call them Shop 1 and Shop 2) today and both quoted me $650-$800 bucks for the install.

Shop 1 said that to fit that tire size, I would absolutely need a CMC. Install & CMC they quoted $800. Install without the CMC $650.

Shop 2 said that at most I will need minor plastic trimming. They charge hourly and gave the $650-$800 quote as well, but won't do a CMC.

More details that you probably don't need:

I have a 2019 DCLB OR and I use it as a DD 99% of the time. Eighty mile commute four times a week. I want to be able to take it on adventures, but the majority of the time it's going to be on asphalt. I am currently eyeing --

The level 3 Fox Kit from Headstrong.
    https://www.headstrongoffroad.com/store/p191/FOX_Level_3_Kit_-_05-Current_Tacoma.html
With Extended Travel COs, 3-leaf AAL and TC UCAs
$2779 Seems like a good price for all of that (although I was looking at the Stage 3 Icon as well)

I want to run 17" wheels with 285/70R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers or BFG K02s
(I might do 18" FN BFDs since the Six Shooters are out of stock)

I'm new to all of this, and have done nothing but read websites off-and-on for the last 6 months. Has anyone run this setup or something similar without the CMC? Rubbing? Issues?

I have fox 2.5 in front 2.0 reservoirs in rear with 3 inch lift and do not need a cmc
But 88 rotors once quoted me at 300 for a cmc and I for the install I paid 250 at my local off road shop so 800 seems a little steep for me.
P.s I payed under 1800 for shocks set

I’m running basically the same setup but I have a Dakar heavy leaf pack.

Yes, you will need a cmc with that set up. I’m actually having it done tomorrow while they are changing the springs from 13”-600# to 14”-650# springs.

I trimmed as much plastic as possible and still rub.

My understanding is you will rub when off road and your suspension articulates, but if you mainly stick to city streets you may only rub when backing over an uneven surface with the wheels at full lock.

I'm curious what difference there is that you don't need a CMC and these other folks do. I'd prefer not to do it, but I think I'll just go ahead and drop the $ and not have to worry about it later.
That being said, did you pay <$1800 for just the shocks? That kit includes the Total Chaos UCAs and the HS 3-Leaf AAL, so I imagine that's the disparity. If not, I gotta keep shoppin'!

Edit because I dont' know the difference between greater than and less than signs apparently.

I've got a 3in lift with 285/70/17's, no cmc, no rubbing. Pulled the mud flaps off and removed the front air dam/apron.

Prices look good. Installs are usually $800 and a CMC is about $200

Wheels and offset play a part as well as aftermarket upper control arms with adjustable caster to move the wheel further forward in the well.

Bit of a dangerous game there... Take it for what it's worth but this former ASE Master has done his fair share of alignment work and I'd pay for proper offset wheels or to get the CMC done in a heartbeat before I'd even consider removing what little caster these trucks have - especially on something lifted. Even removing the whole 2.5 degree spec will only give you about 5/8 inch at its very best.

Some are running caster around 4 to 5 with the adjustable arms. The sweet spot seems to be around 3 though.

Correct, but with a factory lower, your only way to get clearance in the rear is to move the upper ball joint forward. That provides negative caster and moves you closer to zero.
