Ok so I gotta ask. Because I love stouts and porters. They are my fav kind of beer, but lately I feel like all the ones I try taste the same. They're all different amounts of chocolate, espresso/coffee, and nuttiness. Have you or anyone else for that matter come across a stout that breaks the mold? I know this isn't whiskey but, just thought I'd ask. I can think of a couple but not many. The peanut butter milk stout from belching beaver, and a mexican chili stout I tasted once at a festival. For the life of me I can't remember the brewery, to my dismay. It was the best I've ever had :(.

No I have to agree they all sort of taste the same and some real bitter. That’s the part I don’t like is the bitterness and those seem to me to be the ones that have more of an espresso flavor to them.

The ones that are bourbon barrel aged kind of fit into the whiskey conversation. I mean it’s sort of on topic lol.

Dude, I feel like I give a good description whiskeys all the time. Then I go to a blind tasting and can't pick out a single whiskey right...and I question all I know lol

    :rain:

Think of those butterscotch Halloween candies you got as a kid. That's what I relate it to in it's essence, but probably less sweet than the actual candy.

Ya it’s one of those tastes that I can never really pick out, I think I have it and nope. I love butterscotch candy and pudding and pie but I guess my pallet just sucks lol.

Now vanilla and caramel I can always picks out.

I think of the Werther's as the go to for butterscotch flavor. Definitely A bit more subdued than that but a sugary caramel toffee flavor.

I’m new to all this whiskey stuff and my pallet is more tequila and beer driven so we shall see here soon. Got some electronics to solder first though.

I don't really drink beer much anymore, but we went to a local brewery last night for a buddy's birthday. Turning Point Brewery in Bedford, TX. They have one called Oatipus Complex. Man, that was delicious. Tasted like a Nutty Buddy candy bar.

It's nice and complex - more than a $35 whiskey has any right to be. It is unique, though, so there will be lots of really negative reviews to go along with lots of really positive ones. I liked it enough to buy me a second bottle :D.

I've just learned more ways to BS on giving tasting notes.

Picking them out doesn't matter. Leave that to the people who drink for a job, not for fun. I can tell a rye from a bourbon from a peated scotch from a non-peated scotch. I can tell when something is higher proof and such, but getting really granular on identifying stuff and picking out mashbills and the like? Forget about it.

You like what you like. You like drinking it the way you like drinking it. You taste in it what you taste in it.

When I taste butterscotch in a whiskey, to me it is like the raw flavor of a butterscotch candy. What I mean is, it is the butterscotch flavor without much (any?) sweetness. Like the difference between milk chocolate and high coco level dark chocolate. Or like the vanilla flavor you get from vanilla extract (not sweet) vs the vanilla flavor from white chocolate or vanilla ice cream (sweet). If you're looking for the sweet butterscotch, you probably won't find it.
I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing .

Only important thing is to have some good stuff at the ready for when company arrives :D.

You know that’s probably it. I’m looking for that sweetness I associate with butterscotch and not getting it so I’m substituting the flavor profile for something else in my head.

Opened up the bottle. Not sure about all the flavors of it. I just taste burny lol it definitely has a bite at the back end, as I said before I’m a tequila guy so I’m used to that but I was expecting a sweeter taste out of this for some reason and it didn’t seem to be there.

I did the build your own bourbon on their site and it said my bourbon is Weller Special Reserve. How is that one?
