NOTE: I have Aspergers Syndrome, which is a high-functioning form of autism. I was diagnosed in late 1998, when I was 9 years old. My AS has a lot to do with my obsession with trucks and HVAC. I also love photography and see it as an innocent hobby, and when security guards tell me I can't take pictures of innocent stuff, AS more than likely heightens my dislike of security guards.

 

Bottom line, the "mall" is legally private property and they're trying to control what is being recorded for operational security purposes. If they can limit the location being scouted, they can limit their risk from a planned attack. Before 9/11, they didn't really care, but it changed after that.

There's also the more reasonable reason that they are trying to protect privacy of their customers.

This does not apply to areas that are funded with public money.

 

Also, I couldn't help but notice that you are in law enforcement...

The actual police have historically been pretty cool in my opinion. It's security guards who think they're cops who are douchebags! The one time I was stopped by the actual police for photography, it was a bit overwhelming and borderline traumatizing, but the cops were cool and professional.

 

Well....that could be said for ANY law.

Fact is, it's illegal to drink under the age of 21. Not hard to avoid being "turned" into a criminal. Don't underage drink. Don't want a speeding ticket? Don't speed.

Not a difficult concept.

Sad, but true...

I've been threatened with having the cops called on me over parking in Doylestown at least FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES.

I've had so many confrontations with people over parking in Doylestown (regardless of whether or not I was threatened with police involvement), that I have lost count.

Yeah. I do it legally under the supervision of an adult. Two different things. I doubt your friend was drinking with her parents.

 

I blame MADD. Their sole purpose originally was to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving. Now they've devolved into neo-prohibitionist lobbyists.

Also, I honestly don't think people's lives need to be ruined over crimes where nobody get hurt.

For example, I've heard of someone's legally-purchased vehicle being seized just because the cops caught them picking up a prostitute.

 

I just think the fine was a bit steep, and where's that money going?

I just think that the government and law enforcement should be held to higher standards and have a much stricter burden of proof.

I once got suspended in middle school for "assaulting" a school bully when he 100% deserved, and most recently a sheriff's deputy lied to a cop in order to slap me with a ticket, so yeah, I'm a bit jaded.

If I ended up handcuffed in the back of a squad car because some cop thought MY TRUCK was stolen, I'd sue the police department.

Vehicles have these little things called license plates and VINs. A quick run of the license plate and the driver's license would confirm ownership, and if the cop still wasn't sure, then run the fucking VIN! No need to traumatized an innocent part by handcuffing them.

 

Also, I think the various motor vehicle codes of this country should differentiate between "speeding" and actually speeding. For example, 5 MPH over in Pennsylvania is treated as a parking ticket and the driver receives no points. Anything 6 MPH and above can result in 3 to 4 points.

I got pulled over for 43 in a 25 and would have gotten 4 points on my license in addition to having to pay an exhorbitant $180 fine if I'd merely pled guilty. I fought the ticket and got it knocked down to 5 over, which resulted in no points.

In Pennsylvania, I believe anything above 15 MPH over the speed limit is considered reckless driving, which I think is a whole different charge than speeding.

As a rule of thumb, if you don't go more than 15 MPH over the posted limit, cops look the other way.

In New York, I believe it's possible to get points on your license for 2 MPH over.

 

He handcuffed my dad for our safety. It's the law. The court will rule in his favor cause he's doing his job.

So.....What have we learned boys and girls?

1. If you don't want a ticket, don't speed? If you do get a ticket, cowboy up and own it. If the cop is gracious and cites you for "Failure to obey traffic device" look at it as a gift.

2. If you don't want to lose your vehicle, don't pick up hookers. That one is suspect, however as solicitation is typically a misdemeanor with a citation to appear before a judge.

3. If you don't want to lose your license, pay a shit ton of fines and fees, don't drink and drive.

4. If you underage drink, see #3. Along with stay where ever your at.

5. Give a cop shit, take his commands as a suggestion, do not pass go, do not collect $200, go directly to jail with a possible attitude adjustment to get you to comply.

Again, it's really not that hard, unless one has a chip on their shoulder towards LE.

 

1. I've gotten one speeding ticket in almost eight years of having my license (who doesn't get at least one speeding ticket in their lifetime?). I didn't feel like having point points on my license or paying higher insurance premiums, so I fought it and got it knocked down from 18 MPH to 5 MPH over.

2. I don't have any desire to pick up hookers. I just think it's unfair when police seize people's property for ANYTHING other the fact that the item was purchased using illegally-earned money. You and me both know that they only care about selling the vehicle to generate revenue for the department.

3. I'm way past old enough to drink and always use Uber when I've been drinking. I have been hit by a drunk driver in my Tacoma before and the way the situation was handled still burns me up to this day, three and a half years later.

That first time I was pulled over for speeding back in 2017, I was just really frazzled, didn't think I was speeding, and assumed the cop was pulling me over for "suspicion of drunk driving" (It was after 11pm). First words out of my mouth, before the cop even made it to my window, were "I don't know why the hell I got pulled over!" You don't need to explain to me why this was a mistake, because I know. I have Aspergers, I don't deal well with changes tommy routine (like enjoying a drive home), and I hadn't been pulled over in over a decade so I'd become rather blasé about how to handle a traffic stop.

The cop not only wrote me the ticket but also started looking over my truck for anything else he could write me up for (inspection sticker, etc). I take care of my truck and keep everything legal, so there was nothing else he could do.

The bar where I was working at the time is owned by a prominent local attorney, and I called him the next day.

Due to things coming up in my lawyer's personal life, the court date was delayed twice. I was stopped in May 2017, and the court date was in late September.

I apologized to the cop for my behavior and we shook hands. Before that, he was still willing to drop the charge to 5 MPH over.

A few months later (before the court date from the first traffic stop), I was stopped maybe three miles from home for making a left turn on a red light at a confusing intersection. It was after midnight on Labor Day weekend and I had just driven 40 miles from my grandma's (no drinking), so I was tired. I was very polite, and got let off with a warning.

 

I do have a bit of a chip on my shoulder, though one of my friends said I'm "jaded"...

I have Aspergers, which often makes it quite hard to let things go when I feel I've been wronged. I don't care if the antagonist is a middle school bully or an adult who carries a badge and gun.

My first encounter with police was at the age of 17 when I was on my learner's permit and my dad was teaching me how to drive in a hospital parking lot. My dad was still in the Navy at the time, and we'd been back in Pennsylvania for less than a year. This was in May 2006. My dad had a Pennsylvania driver's license, but two of our three vehicles were registered in Virginia, where we'd moved from in July 2005. My dad was teaching me to drive in his 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, which was originally supposed to become
mine when I got my license.

I understand that it was less than five years after 9/11, but the ineptitude of hospital security is so laughable it's impossible to get mad.

So, you've got a couple of white guys circling the hospital parking lot for over an hour, in an older but well-maintained SUV with out-of-state plates. What do you do? Common sense would say you approach the vehicle and inquire as to what the occupants are up to. Just months earlier, we'd been kicked off a nearby college campus by some dickweed security guard in the middle of a driving lesson because he claimed it was private property (even though it was a public campus).

Nope, hospital security calls the cops, and they show up right around the time I tell my dad I'm ready to leave the parking lot and practice on the open road. A marked Crown Vic pulls up behind me as I make a left out of the hospital parking lot, and turns on its lights seconds later. My dad and I were both utterly confused, because my dad didn't think I'd done anything wrong.

Cop walks up, goes through the usual song and dance, then tells us that security called about "a suspicious green SUV with Virginia plates circling the parking lot for more than an hour."

He ran my dad's license as a matter of course, and after continually telling me to keep calm and not make any sudden movements, my dad is the one who nearly flipped his lid. Why...?

Like I said, the Pathfinder was registered in Virginia. My dad had a Pennsylvania driver's license, but being active duty military he was not required to register his vehicle in Pennsylvania. My dad's Pathfinder had a Department of Defense sticker on the windshield, as well as numerous Navy stickers and a "Naval Aviation" license plate frame on the back. The clues were right there, but the cop attempted to quote the law to my dad, pulling the whole "I'll let you off with a warning this time, but the law states that you must register your vehicle in Pennsylvania within 30 days."

I thought my dad's veins were going to explode, but he remained calm. You could tell he was pissed as he took his military ID out of his wallet and told the cop that he was in the Navy. The cop apologized and we left.

Unfortunately, my dad was so pissed that he wanted to go home and made me switch seats with him.

That, however, is not the reason I have "a chip on my shoulder"...

In fact, I fully understand I was stopped that time and have no problems with the way it went down.
