Any real improvements on the 2019 vs the 2016?

I have a 2016 Access cab and am thinking of moving to a new quad cab. I'm curious if there's been any noticeable/major improvements over the past few years.

A couple complaints I have on my 2016 is the cabin noise and the highway transmission shifting. Have these been improved on any?
    TIA

A refresh is coming for the 2020 MY. Maybe wait for that too?

BTW, Toyota's ECM calibrations have been improving. I can only speak of the M/T side of the house though.

I have 4k in mine and love it. It went from 16 mpg to 19.5 and I don't notice the transmission problems people complain about.

If you want a bargain buy now. If you don't mind paying a small premium, wait for a 2020.

    LOL

If the rumours about the next gen Taco's engine are true, well that may not be good advice :)

Lets' be honest though, you're also not running the early ECM calibration either. Just be glad Toyota heard their customers and at least attempted to make the product better. If you don't believe that, look up the TSBs related to driveablity on the 16's, 17's, and 18's.

I mean, to me, a MAJOR improvement from 2016 to the 2019 [starting with the 2018 models] is the Toyota Safety Sense that comes standard across the board. I know it is all relative and some people do not care about it, but it is a big deal. I admit though, that I do not like the Radar cruise control when I use it around town, because it wants to hit the breaks halfway down the block from stop signs! So I learned how to just activate "regular" cruise control, and that works fine to me. If I had a 2016, I would not pay to upgrade or get, a 2019 just for the TSS though, but if you are wanting to upgrade to a 4-door anyway, you will get enough to make it worth your while. IMHO...

It will have a hole in the drivers side floor for your feet to fit through.

Boghog1; although I haven't utilized the right side bedside "cubby", as you referred to the storage area as, I consider "losing" the drivers or left side "cubby" as a loss, and not an improvement, which is what the question asked about. I think these storage area would have been better served if they at least had a lock on them, because as it is, I wouldn't put anything in there that I considered to be of any value, because they are easily opened, unless one has a tonneau cover on and locks the tailgate lock.

For me it’s a downgrade if you plan on doing a lift or mod the front grille . Headache .

2018 was the last real feature update, with the most significant refresh “known to date” comming on the 2020, wait if you can. Lots of info on here in regard to 2020 “new” standard add on’s... hold off until September when they start showing up on the lots.

Knowing what I know now. I’d rather have the 2020. Solely based on apple carplay/android auto, and adjustable drivers seating. Plus the new PRO color doesn’t look half bad

Or if you decide you don't want to pay the premium for the 2020 and don't really want any of the new "improvements" on the 2020, wait till the new model comes out and buy a steeply discounted 2019 "leftover". I have 2019, just turned 4K miles on it and am pleased.

I think you’ll notice a big difference in cabin noise going from an access cab to a double cab. I found a pretty noticeable difference between the 2 when test driving. The cab in my 18 DC is also way quieter than my 07 2nd Gen DC. I like the safety sense, the radar cruise is great for long highway runs. And the collision was quicker to slow me down when someone locked up the brakes in front of me than I would have been on a couple occasions. It’s a good thing with so many distracted drivers on the road in this day and age. Obviously there a lot of people on here who aren’t fans due to some issues when lifting and even things as simple as changing style of grill are a bit more complicated now. Like everything though, everything was new once and people learn to work with it.

Like stated though, I think you’ll see the bigger improvements in the 2020 model.

Agree with buying the forthcoming 2019 leftovers in OCT/NOV (if you’re on a serious budget)... they will have deep discounts as the 2020 refresh will have those sought after features (power seat, entune upgrade, car-play, LED lights, etc), making the 2019’s difficult to sell when both models are concurrently available.

Thank you for the positive comments, have not read up on model years, plus don't plan to trade anytime soon. 32,000 on my '16 now. Have had it 38 months now.

Yeah... I get that also. I believe OP wants a bigger cab, hence the interest in “upgrading”. I don’t keep my vehicles more than 4 years... that seems to be a good jumping off point for me (everyone has different objectives/wants/needs). I wouldn’t bump 2016 to 2019 (nor 2018 to 2020)... I’ll give my truck to my son in a few years, then buy whatever I’m in the mood for at that time.

turners1222; I just bought my 2019 TRD Sport on April 10th. Before that though, I was the original owner of a 1996 Tacoma Xtracab that I had for over 23 years, having bought it in November of 1995 when the 96's had just come out. Back then, I paid $13,500 Out The Door for it. I sold it this year, on April 4th, for $6700 Cash. That means that I got back $100 under HALF of what I paid for it over 23 years ago! Not a bad return and means that the truck only 'cost' me [other than for normal maintenance] just over $200 a year to own! But as anyone knows, if you don't plan on keeping the vehicle, as expensive as they are nowadays, it just doesn't pay to drive one for a few short years and then try to get anything out of it when you sell it. Even now, I see used 16, 17, and 18 Tacomas for sale, and they are trying to get prices that are only a few 1000 less than what a brand new one would cost! As you mentioned, most people would just rather pay the $4-5k more to get a new one. Here is a link to a video I just made yesterday, of my truck! Sorry, but I can't help showing it off! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzfpYRA0Vuc
