Thought I would make a page for my new 19 OR MT Build and BS.

Traded my 16 OR Auto for the OR MT!

So what I think about the 19 and the MT in general from my 16 experience...

The 19 has some new safety and convenience over my 16.
-Adaptive cruise control. This is so far my favorite convenience. I have it set to level 3, each level seems to be a car length. So if I have the truck set for 65mph and the car infront of me slows to 55, then truck will remain 3 cars behind the vehicle while traveling at 55. If the vehicle speeds up or moves, the truck will go back up to 65mph. So far the coolest thing.

- Auto High beams. This feature seems to be hit or miss. The truck will sometimes confuse a white traffic sign for someone's headlights if you are at the right angle. Sometimes when a car is oncoming, the system will not see that it's a set of headlights till its roughly 100 yards away, by then you've blinded the person. It's very hit or miss.
- Lane Departure Alert. It works well and beeps at you when crossing a lane over 38mph without your directional.
- Collision alert. I haven't had it kick on yet so I am unsure how it is. Being a MT truck, it might be a little weird, causing the truck to stall. If this feature is activated, my reaction will be to throw it out of gear.

- Visual differences I noticed between the 16 and 19 would be the different button layout for stuff, mostly the rear window button and I got the panel for the multiple buttons that I have wanted for a while that goes under the AC controls panel. The Center console storage now has 2 USB plugins vs. the cig lighter plug that was there before. New front grill in Black vs. The ugly chrome. The plastic bed rails on top now seem to have a pad or protection that lifts it off the paint on the bed fender itself.
The driver side bed storage box is gone, idk why but I really didn't like it anyways, all your shit would get dusty and dirty anyhow.

- Thoughts on the MT vs Auto. So little background on my MT past. I had a 1998 s10 4-banger 5spd. A 2002 z28 Camaro that I converted to a t56 6-speed and my beater 88 Ford Diesel is a 5 speed. I noticed that the Clutch pedal on this truck is super different from anything else I've had. It feels like its Electronically activated and hydraulically controlled, meaning it doesn't have that firm pedal that you would get normally by moving fluids manually. It took me a little bit to know where the clutch engages. For long time manual owners of hydraulic clutch vehicles, this feels like you have NO clutch, like you need to refill the fluid or bleed the lines, lol. The shifter is smooth and effortless. I do hear a little clanking sound when the shifter isnt in gear and you hit pot holes, guess that is normal from what I have read. Cruise control with a manual up a steep grade can be kinda shitty. Having traffic behind me, I would start losing speed in 6th, I have to take it out of gear causing me to lose more speed and put it down to 4th or 3rd depending on grade and speed, that kinda sucks.

Overall, I am happy with the MT. It def has more pep in its step and pulls hard in the lower gears vs the auto. I have only 286 miles on it after driving it from Anchorage, AK to Homer, AK. Getting ready to jump on the ferry for the Voyage to Kodiak. Ina couple months I will be going cross country to my next station in North Carolina! Keep watching for mods that will be happening soon!

Great move going to the manual, it is so much more fun to drive than an auto.

 

I made this same trade 2 years ago, zero regrets. The MT is the only way to go in these trucks.

 

I guess that I just don’t get the MT thing. Had a few over the years but much prefer the AT. To each his own right?

 

I agree. It's more fun for sure. As stated in the write up, it took me a hour of driving around to figure out where the power vs gear selection and the clutch took a few to get use to lol.

 

Very true. I did not mind the auto. It's more relaxing not having to worry about gear selection and the sport feature worked for mountain driving.

 

Welcome to the MT club

Recommend finding someone local with a Tactrix cable and flashing the TSB update for the manual transmission (Toyota won’t do it in most cases because the TSB reads for autos even tho it calls out MT ECU codes). It’ll help with lower RPM power.

Gonna need this moved to the build section... get lost real quick in the general 3rd Gen section.

 

I guess I'm in the same boat as you... I loved having a manual in my sports car but when I think truck I'd like to just be in lazy comfortable mode lol.

Sub'd for more MT to AT comparisons. I have a 2008 tacoma fans love it. Would like another 2nd gen but haven't found one in the color I want that isn't a rust bucket. So I'm considering a 3th gen MT. Would ddefinitely like to hear more about how it drives and power it has. Thank you

 

I would suggest an extended test drive, the powerband is quite a different experience.

 

Your shifter’s smooth? Mine is balky/crunchy, i can feel it bump past two things as i move the shift lever into 1,2, or 3. Since new

 

It probably has alot to do with what you are comparing it to, the shifter is butter smooth compared to my previous 1st and 2nd Gens.

 

Haha thats true, i got spoiled by my previous BMWs.
It does go in easier than my buddies 2nd gen 5 speed, his takes a lot of force to get into each gear. But mines notchy for sure, and my other friends 2015 6 speed 2nd gen is actually smooth all around

 

Congrats Chewy!! Maybe it is just me, but this MT and me fit like a glove since day 1 and now with 38,xxx mi. VERY smooth, stupid easy to drive, and makes driving fun.
