The title says it all. I have to drive about 50 miles of highway to pick up a fully assembled exhaust system for my DBL cab. I have the short bed. Does anyone think I can get away with this thing hanging out the back of my truck or should I borrow my buddies f150 long bed?

Do you have a sliding rear window in the back of the cab?

Could you have some of the piping go through the cab window and into the cab? Obviously, you'll wanna wrap it up really good (old blankets) and strap it down good so it doesn't rattle around and scratch stuff up.

How long is it? You can't break it down into 2 pieces?

If it is highway all the way then I would consider leaving the tailgate up. Depends on how much is hanging off the back. I would probably put it in the bed reverse of the direction you install it.

If I have to put the tailgate down then I would just ensure there is no way it can leave that bed and maybe some red material if it is hanging way out there and I would get some old blankets to put the exhaust on.

I would opt for tailgate down. Might put stress on it enough to crack a weld.

I put the heavy side down in the bed and routed it diagonally out. I used an extended bed to tie it down but you can use the bed tie down (d ring) or the bed cleat. Just make sure it is tied down tight so it doesn't bounce and if you can put a red rag in the back of it so you don't get pulled over for it sticking out past your truck :D.

I have straps and all Im just worried about some douche running into it from behind me. Or it getting messed up from bouncing around in the back of the tiny bed I have.

just install your new exhaust wherever you pick it up.. its not that hard of a job. take a hacksaw with u and cut your oem system in an easy to weld area so it will fit in your bed. done and done :)

You should be ok as long as you tie it down tight. I took the side street and drove about 20 miles and I was ok. Didn't take it on the freeway. As for the douche, if they are gonna hit you, it will happen regardless. Just make sure to put a red rag on it :D.

No such thing as a dumb question, just dumb people asking questions... And since we all own Tacoma's, we're obviously on the smarter end of the spectrum! :D

I have the stock exhaust for my 02 sittin in the bed right now, It sticks out a a little but it's not really bad. Maybe the 2nd Gens are longer... It's not that heavy either, But I'd still suggest being careful. The through the window idea is good too... Maybe I'll try it... BTW... Anybody want to buy an 02?

Had the same questions........stainless portion is going in the back bed wrapped up with a towel.......another towel where it is going to lay on the top portion of the bed frame.......then tie her down! Should be fine....

I think thats a great deal! Im paying $240. Thing looks brand new from the pics though so I guess its worth it. Dude said it only has 1500 on it so I can deal with that I guess. $240 beats $390 - $500 new IMO.

I think Im gonna go the same route. Just wrapped it up and strap it down.

Good luck with everything! Mine has some minor rust in 2 spots......just enough to sand off and clean up........think the exhaust i am getting is 3 years old.........looks in mint shape so i'm happy.......beats 450!

Yup yup, you too man.... I'm still trying to find a picture of the actual muffler to find if there is a TRD emblem on it so I know its the real deal.

The tip of the exhaust will be wider than stock and also be chrome like. It will/should have the TRD emblem on the end of the exhaust. Do some searches on the site......I have seen them on here before.
