Debunked the 85mph limiter myth with 5.29. My speedometer is calibrated if that means anything

What size tire? I just have 33” tires and just pulled the trigger and getting 5.29’s installed right now and its in the shop. I was a little nervous about this and the possibility of lower mpg. But seemed like 5.29’s were the way to go.

I have 285/75/17 aka 34’s. I don’t think you’ll regret it. I got 18mpg now on the highway opposed to 14-15 I was getting lol

Showing on the screen. I have my speedometer calibrated so I’m assuming the MPG is corrected now.

You’re forgetting weight. Some of us are running a lot of weight I’m on 33s with 5.29 and it still feels sluggish.

Has anyone had a chance to use the much hyped paddle commander with 5.29s ? Not sure if it’s worth the money seems like a heavier foot accomplishes exact same result lol.

I think you may also have a bit of drag created which also doesn’t help mpgs.

hows the 5.29's with the skinnies? i have 255/85 toyo mt's and was wondering if the gears will be worth it. i have the ov tune and it helped a ton with mpg with the base tune. the performance tune has the sprint booster effect and i cant stand how it made the pedal feel, way to sensitive. also, is your speedometer calibrated? just my tires alone account for an 8% difference from what my screen reads. i get about 13-16mpg right now with the tune with my rack and rtt on.

My intent was to be general, and I stand by it. Most of the Tacomas I see are lifted with bigger tires. There are far less that have a ton of extra weight added on. I am in the smaller category as well. I have front and rear bumpers, sliders, full skids, etc. and I am on 265/75-17 and I may end up running 5.29s with this tires size. I notice the weight on my truck and the small increase in tire size has made it even more noticeable. I would actually encourage people to 5.71 with 35s if that ratio was available to us. If anyone from nitro is reading this please make some 5.71s.

It feels like it could use even smaller gear sometimes to honest. The mt skinnies are e rated tire so it’s heavy and mt thread doesn’t help I’m sure. Ov tune isn’t worth it with 5.29 until they make one for this gear specifically is what I’ve heard. I spedo isn’t calibrated it’s about 4-5 miles off going 70 I’m actually doing 74-75. But to get 250 miles out of a tank at gas now at almost $5 per gallon is absurd. Should have gotten a diesel

Might get shit for this but I wish I bought a new Prius as a daily and an old truck for everything else.. I get the same MPG as my dads 2008 F150 with a 30gal tank so he actually goes further than I do.

What are you guys using to calibrate the speedometers for tire size and gearing?

Yeah I know what you mean. Luckily Tacoma isn’t my daily otherwise I’d sell it for sure. 13 mpg and that’s baby sitting it is simply a joke for a midsize truck. A tundra would do much better with its massive v8 in terms of power and fuel consumption with the same config as I have now. I needed something smaller for turns and tight squeeze trails so here I am.

Hypertech Speedometer calibrator. Sits inline between the ECU and dash. Super easy to use, just calibrate for tire size, DON'T CHANGE GEAR RATIO.
