I and people I knew back then with mojo in the northern Midwest ,looked at Toyota trucks as toys for people that could not afford or did not need a truck for being a truck . Had to be Calif thing ?

 

False. There hasn’t been mojo in that region since Matt Hughes, and he drives a Tacoma.

You’re cracking me up I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not this is the first time I’ve ever felt awkward in TW

 

Due to reasons of missing the cutoff for having my rusted frame replaced on my 2005, I am looking at getting a 2019 this Fall to replace it for work. The big thing is that it needs to handle my aluminum pop-up camper which I use solely for the work I do and have for the past decade, about 1,000 extra pounds all in. A Tundra is not an option, a new camper for one would set me back about $23K not counting the truck and is way too big for the places I need to access.

So while I wait for the final word from Yota, I test drove a 2019 in manual, 6 speed auto and then a 5.7L Tundra on Friday for good measure. Before I share what my experience was, consider my current ride is on heavy load range E tires, has a built suspension, rock sliders and is over 400hp/420tq on a highly modified and supercharged platform that will see me get 22MPG without the camper on.

I was shocked at how utterly lethargic the 3.5L is in either manual or auto before 4,000 rpms, it felt like my friend's 2004 3.0L. So suffice to say, if I *do* go the route of a 2019 and I am still considering it for how nice the cockpit upgrade is, I will be doing an OVtune in very short order. But I really question if that will be enough because my 4.0 has an extraordinarily powerful torque curve that is as flat as Kansas from 1,500-4,500 rpms and is an immensely noticeable improvement from idle over the gen 3.

I have a few months to figure it out, maybe someone near me is running OVtune and I can see the difference before I blow $40K on this thing.

 

You already answered your own question, try driving the new ranger. It never hurts to test drive one and you can compare. It might rock your boat. Btw F150 gets better mpg and more torque

That is certainly on my list, but one issue for me is bed rail height, it has to be below 20" in order for my camper to fit.

So for example, Either the Chevy Colorado or GMC Canyon are out due to being over 22" bed rail height, same for the Tundra and F150. The Ranger is 20.8" so it is right at the limit of a shim for my comfort zone. My ride is 18" and the Gen-3 is 19" FYI.

None of this makes the Gen-3 a bad truck, it is just that I built the perfect platform in the 4.0 and now the damn bed rust is causing a massive reset. I can probably manage in with a tuned 3.5L but it's gonna super-duper suck at times, especially when I want that stout bottom end for safe crawling and passing.

 

I'm not entirely ruling this out, but as I solve this problem I have to try, that is part of what these forums are for, right? It might make more sense to find a clean framed salvage gen-2 and swap it or even pay what Toyota wants to put a new frame on mine. Like I said in the post above, my situation is super niche and I am not using it as a platform to harp on the Gen-3, just ferret out all options.

I'll stop trying to sell my self on this truck when I have arrived at more empirical data and hands on.

 

What in the bed is rusted? The Manual has steeper gears out back and will scoot along a little better, you also have to adjust your driving style a little coming from the 2nd Gen.
