34s seem to be the sweet spot for these trucks. Would you do it again? I’m still contemplating between 34s and 35s.

If your worried about mileage or cutting, I would go with the 34's in an AT

Not really worried about cutting, Mileage? A tad Lol. I get around 15-18 on 33” M/T so I guess it won’t be a huge difference.

Are you saying if I re-gear to 4.88’s with 265/70/17’s I may not like it? According to Nitro it’s ideal...just curious. Nitro said that 34’s would be the absolute max for 4.88’s , but it would be better to do 5.29’s

4.88 for 33 is fine. 34+ should be for 5.29. Keep in mind the added weight from bumpers etc

Ok, that’s what I thought. I’m technically running just under 32” so hills should be easy once the 4.88 tune arrives...agree?

I dont think 5.29 are really necessary. I've got 315/70r17 and it's good to go. I mean 4.88 with the 34's was awesome with the 91 performance tune but it just felt like a race truck haha

You dont even need a 4.88 specific tune. The 4.88's are going to give you more than enough torque to enjoy the truck. I noticed with mine, with the 4.88s and 34's it would pretty much skip 5th, 4th to 6th when getting up to speed and it would hold most smaller hills no problem. if it was really steep it would drop into 4th not 5th

Thanks for the info. The 4.88 tune is just suppose to optimize shift points with the rpm band with my 32” tires. I’m also running a second set of wheels with 32” MTs. It’s either that or Hypertech, but the 4.88 tune is free for us tune guys already. Really looking forward to it

Before I got the hypertech, tune and gears my truck felt like I was pulling a trailer all the time. After i got the hypertech though it felt like the truck shed a few hundred pounds. Qn optimized tune would be badass though. Maybe then we can see some better shifting and mileage :fingerscrossed:

I was running 4.3 mt gears for a bit on the 285/75r17 and then added a cbi offroad bumper. So basically I added a bunch more weight then switched to the 4.88s. So yes, it felt a lot better after that

No haha I'm running somewhere around 400-450 of armour and 35's and the truck doesn't feel to bad with the 4.88s

I'm not on the fence about getting 4.88's but if East Coast Gear Supply sells assembled 4.88 clamshells and third members for my 2017 Tacoma ready to be installed for a few hundred bucks more than the gear package (even with new koyo bearings), does it not make sense to go that route? It's already put together and ready...just find a shop to install. Sure, you pay a core charge up front but that's refunded when you ship the core back in their box with their fedex label for a shipping discount. Maybe I'm wrong...but the cost to purchase a gear package plus the labor to do it from scratch looks to be a great deal more expensive.
