Toyota frame recall

I do not recommend you get your Taco undercoated. There is a procedure to check for frame perforation. It involves taping on the frame with a hammer to find weak spots. I do not know the exact procedure. I am sure you can find it.

Toyota undercoated the frame on my 1999 it only stopped the frame from rusting through until after the extended warranty had expired.

I would suggest that you find the frame test procedure and do that yourself so you know the status. If you find your frame is still good, there is a link on here that shows how someone protected their frame from further corrosion. I wish I had done that to mine instead or allowing Toyota to just cover the rust and hide the ugly.

As I understand, they are no longer doing "buyouts" instead they are replacing frames as required. I now have a 2005 with a brand new frame, brake lines, suspension parts, etc. I bought it to replace my 1999.

 

You give me hope.I have an inspection for my 2007 in December. I have extensive delamination and a hole under the bed that looks bad .

 

This is good advice. The only frames that should get coated are brand new ones with no surface rust.

 

Is this recall still in affect?

 

Let's see... 2009+12=2021. So the answer for you is YES!

BTW, it's not technically a recall - it is the settlement of a class action suit.

Before you bring it in for an inspection, you might want to do some poking around for yourself to have some idea of your frame's condition. Also, should it fail inspection (i.e., success! new frame!) do some thinking about other things you might want to take care of while it's apart. There's a bunch of stuff they'll do for cost of parts only - no labor, since they have to put it all back together again anyway. And many dealers are fine with installing parts that you provide. Search the frame threads here and you'll get all kinds of ideas.

You have another couple of years (12 years from date of First Service), so if your frame doesn't look so bad to you, and if you live in a state that douches the roads with salt all snowy winter long (like mine), maybe take her through another winter to get her good and rusty. But if your frame looks like swiss cheese already (like mine did - they wouldn't let me leave in it, gave me a loaner for 2 1/2 months), go for it! Just sayin' you don't need to be in a rush.

Getting a new frame is almost like getting a new truck - I can't believe how much better my 2007 drives after I got my new frame last summer. 12 years out is a heckuva deal. There was actually a factory recall for my truck for frame replacement, and they sent me the big envelope with the details. It expired in 2016, and I was all set to do it, but I misread 'March' as "May" (eyes not so good with fine print). I thought 'aha! I won't be late! I'll do it in April'. Alas, it expired in March. Boy howdy was I ever pissed off at myself!

That's when I stumbled across TW (don't remember how), and discovered there was a frame settlement, and I felt like the Governor called and gave me a last minute reprieve from Death Row. So now I have a 2007 Taco with a brand new frame after all...

Yea I’ve noticed a bit of rust but nothing crumbling apart I don’t think ( I’ll have to have another look to make sure)

Do they only replace it if it looks severely rusted out?
Also it took the. 2.5 months to do the job wow!

 

Took 3-4 days to do the job - 2.5 months to get the new frame and parts. So I tooled around in a brand new Taco all that time. Told everyone it was my new truck

The criterion for frame replacement is quite straightforward - if there's a 10 mm (roughly 1/2 inch) hole anywhere, you get a new frame. Look by the catalytic converters - that seems to be a common place for it. But do spend some time perusing the several other 'frame rust recall' threads on here - you will learn a LOT! You have time to do some research and planning...

 

Really!? That would be quite somthing it would be even more awesome to drive around in a new tundra (besides for the gas)

What kinds of things did you get replaced when they did yours?

 

I found out too late and I am now trying to at least get a discount on a new frame swap via my dealer that I brought the truck new from. I thought about just parting ways and getting a 2019 but then I drove it, that 3.5L motor is in hibernation until over 4,000 rpms. And the more I read about the auto trans in the new Gen-3, the more I think even coming up with $10K to $15K out of pocket for a new frame on my super niche rig might still be the way to go.

For those of you who got your frame replaced under the settlement, count your lucky stars because either way, I am out at least 10 grand for a replacement frame or more for a new truck.

 

I didn't get that much done, because I didn't really think about it beforehand - some great threads on the topic came up here after mine was done. But I got a new steering rack, leaf springs (free, under recall), and front shocks. I had some other things checked out, but they were OK. But look around here and you'll get all sorts of ideas.

Yes, I drove a 2018 Tacoma, double cab, 4 L engine, etc. for much of the summer. The new ones sure are bigger - too big IMO, not even really the same truck. I much prefer my old regular cab, 4 cyl, manual transmission taco. The only thing I really liked about the new rig was the keyless entry system, lol. For some reason it really amused me

 

Based on the pic of your back seat, your truck can’t be any newer than a 2008. Both the US and Canadian settlements specifically state 12 years from date of 1st use. Depending on when your truck was sold new off the lot, it’s highly unlikely that you still qualify for a free frame.

 

Actually, the court cases weren’t even settled in 2016. The Canadian settlement covered all 05-10 Tacos til July 21, 2019. After that its 12 years. Sorry to say, it’s too late for your 07. Toyota isn’t going to do anything for you for free. There are shops that weld plates into rusty frames. You’re just going to have to ask around for your area.

Just wanted to update; I had my frame inspected in October of 2019 and they said they would replace it, but it will take a long time for the frame to arrive. Possibly a year. It is now May 2020 and still no frame. I'm not angry, I'm just waiting patiently...

 

Keep waiting patiently. I had mine inspected July 4th, 2019 in Canada. They just called me a week ago and told me my frame is built and ready to ship. My problem is that I live in the US and now with the covid thing, they are real tight with letting people across the border into Canada. Somehow I don't think they are going to consider taking my truck in for a frame swap, "essential" travel. My truck was originally sold new in Canada so I have to have the frame swap done in Canada.

 

I just took mine into Team Toyota of PA and they did an absolutely pitiful job on my frame inspection and “re-spray”. Also gave my truck back covered bottom to top in shop dust and overspray. Rust is still very much prevalent.

 

Did you complain about the over spray and dust?
I made them clean it all off my truck I was so pissed off when I saw it how hard is it to put some poly over it ffs

 

I had my service advisor come out, we took pictures and I’ve now been waiting a week to hear back from a service manager about the issues.
