5.29s with 33 skinny M/Ts here: just got 17.4 MPG for 162.4 miles from my parents place in Chicago to me in WI + other bumming around the city. Combination city driving and interstate. Steel armor front/rear, RTT, rack, etc.

I hadn't noticed a significant increase until recently -- it's finally warm here and I am sure that helps a bit. I baby the throttle a bit but also left it on cruise for the majority of the drive.

I have a lot of weight and on 34’s. Maybe I just drive like a grandpa lol! I barely have to put my foot on the throttle with the 5.29.

I’m using the Rough Country version. It uses the Hypertech module. Even the app says Hypertech. It’s cheaper than the Hypertech one as well.

Wow that makes no sense how that’s possible. Is that on 87 octane perhaps you had a lot of Tail wind lol. I’m
Pretty light foot and usually keep it around 65-70 on freeway so I don’t know why I’m getting such a poor consumption. Wonder if the shop put something else besides 5.29s hahaha

Yeah it’s on 87 octane. I drove through mountain passes and hills when I did that 18mpg. It surprised me too lol. Now my city driving is my old highway mpg 15-16 lol! I have yet to install my OVTune. Maybe I’ll consume for fuel then lol!

Man maybe your airdynamics is better or you have lighter tires or trip computer is broken lol I hear OVTune is not ready for 5.29s at this time.

Yeah the rack and habitat are killer on mpgs. I have a front, rear bumper with swing out and sliders and I'm getting 18.6mpg with stock gears and 285s. I expect it to dip a bunch when I go 35s, but hope the new gears will give back some mpgs and driveability.

Well I had the 5.29 installed before the rack or habitat and it still at best averaged 15-16 no way I’d get 18 unless I drive 55 with tail wind in perfect weather conditions behind a semi braking the wind lol.

Ya on 33s-35s 15-16 will be close to the average, maybe a little lower depending on driving habits and conditions.

The biggest factor in mileage that I noticed was tire size.

    Only the best.
No gasket comes with it. Also you may want to replace your right front axle seal as well since the front diff comes with a new one installed on thr left

    ready for 5.29s? yes
optimized for 5.29s? no, not yet but it will be.
I have the OV with 4.88s (same smell different flavor) on 35s and it'll drive better than a stock tune any day of the century.

Imagine going from this on a trip with a Tacoma and seeing the needle move hahaha. It’s painful. Probably wouldn’t stink as much if gas was $2 a gallon or so but at $5 it’s painful.

My 4.88 order took a little longer than expected and just told them to switch to 5.29s. Getting 14ish MPGs on the highway on 33s with stock gears. Never go into 6th, and above 70 I'm in 4th. Curious to see how that changes.

    33 tires 3/2 lift
Ok, I have read all 36 pages on the gearing and think that I am going with the 5.29s, But I would like to ask again because I only saw one post about towing a trailer RV trailer. I just bought a 17' trailer with a GVW of 5700 lbs, 4456 empty, and the Tacoma is rated for 6600lbs so am within load range. I will be pulling it 4 to 7 times a year camping and hunting. I just bought it and pulled it home, I have 33 tires on and have done nothing else to truck. I was in 4th gear at 3000 RPMs most of the way going 65. Any hills I shifted down to 3rd at around 4000 RPMs going 60mph. Was not happy to say the least, I felt like I was killing the truck. Is there anyone out there that has a similar set up that pulls a RV trailer with the Tacoma? I am. Right on the line with 4.88 and 5.29s I will not be adding any more weight to truck other than rock sliders and will not be pulling trailer to much. Just looking for someone that might have either gears on truck and how they pull with them. 4.88 or 5.29?

Why not the gear ratio? Just read up on the hypertech

Correct. Toyota reads speed off the ABS sensor in the wheel hub.

Interestingly, for those curious -- my Ultragauge shows the unmodified speed. Presumably that's because it's reading it from the actual ECU, whereas the dash is just displaying whatever 'speed' the hypertech tells it to.

If I am not mistaken, all in-line speedo calibrators just fudge the numbers a bit on their way from the ECU to the dash.
