So I think I am gonna try out clipless pedals. Got a little to quick on the pedals for flats in a few spots this weekend.

Any suggestions on shoes or pedals?

Heard good things about 2FO shoes.

I'm a flats guy through and through. I'm just a little frustrated that I slipped a pedal a few times when I was trying to clear rock gardens. I had the legs, just couldn't keep my shoes on the pedals. Maybe I should have just gone up a gear.

I have the exact same mentality with the shoes. Impacts really help on big gaps and drops for dh.

I used to run DC shoes for years...5-10s are the real deal man. To help solidify my bond though Im religious about using straitline defacto pedals. I have to lift my shoe to adjust.

2fo clipless are good shoes... for pedals can't go wrong with the Shimano XT. Nukeproof Horizon Cl is SPD compatible and gets excellent reviews http://nukeproof.com/products/horizon-cl-pedal/

I'm the exact opposite... haven't ridden flats since my BMX days and riding in my Vans. Been clipless on all bikes for decades. MTB; nothing has yet topped the reliability and durability of my Shimano XT pedals. I can clip in/out faster than a fly farts when descending, sliding a corner, dabbing for a second, etc... Shoes; LAKE or Shimano XC7. Both have grippy lugs but super durable uppers and stiff soles for power transfer. Walked plenty of miles in them when I do casual bar rides, so no complaints there either.

Have ridden Crank Bros, but too maintenance intensive with rebuilds, greasing, etc... the only other ones I've really considered and heard great things about are Time ATAC.

@Gunshot-6A if you're going to stay on flats, five tens are the only shoes i'd ever wear.

Heard lots of recommendations for Shimano XTs.

Have heard very similar comments about crankbrothers and the Time pedals as well. Maybe when I get back from Moab next weekend, I'll start doing some research.

    The OEM plastic ones... :anonymous:

Just kidding. Deity Bladerunners on all 3 of mine. Love them. Thinking I am just in too easy of a gear instead of adding a little resistance and staying on the pedals.

Fruita for the 2nd weekend in a row! So good I had to go back. Next stop Moab Fri-Sun!

Had a rad first trip, and met up with @usernotfound then last weekend with a few of my coworkers.

I just recently made the switch after riding flats my whole life. Got a good deal on shimano xtr M9000 and some shoes on craigslist. Love them! but def. took my fair share of spills trying to learn. I am 3 months in on them and still have the occasional uphill clipless fail. They pedal way more efficiently and its nice being glued to the pedals for the unexpected buck

    Haha, nice one.

Flats will never climb like a clipless. period. If you're having trouble through the rock gardens, roots sections, etc on climbs... i'd suggest trying clipless. the shoes/pedal combo will run you $250. if you want to clean those technical climbs, it's really no contest.

Yeah, I think you are right. But honestly, I think for the riding I am doing, it is more about technique. 3/4 riders I was with this weekend were cleaning stuff that I just couldn't stick.

This...dont skimp on the components if you want the bike to last. At the minimum get a bike spec'ed with shimano SLX (XT is the way to go) or SRAM eagle NX (GX is the way to go). 2x drive trains are the thing of the past, so dont get a bike with that. Stay away from suntour forks...lock out is nice, but kind of bougie..bikes these days pedal better with the shocks open then locked out. @shawn3210
