What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Got rid of the acceleration 'Ping' coming from my driveshaft...it was the damn carrier bearing spacers I put in a few months ago. It occurred to me this weekend that the metal ping started happening right around the time I put those spacers in, so I pulled them out and now it's gone. Was driving me nuts

 

Do you know why it was causing a "ping"?

Why did you cut so much out?

I suspect it changed the angle of the driveshaft relative to the pinion in a bad way, I thought Id be doing a good thing by dropping it a bit but apparently it wasn't. Went away instantly when I removed the spacers.

 

Ok, good to know. Seems like some people need to do for vibration issues and some don’t. Not sure if I should go ahead and order a kit when I redo my lift or not now.

 

yeah I had vibes that I thought the carrier bearing drop spacers would fix but they didn't (probably my motor mounts anyway). I think the best way to deal with vibes from rear lift is to put in axle shims rather than spacing down the CB. At least from what I've since read on here. I think I'm better off just leaving it alone though myself

 

sounds good, ill hold off ordering one and just see how it turns out without the drop first.

I used the skateboard tire method. Took 1 inch all around. I was hammering down and bent about 3/4 of my passenger fender. So time to cut

How long does a 'clicking' CV axle tend to last in your guys' experience? I have one on the driver's side that is clicking pretty bad on turns on the trail, coincidentally this is the same side I just increased the right height on by a few threads last week to compensate for lean. Wasn't clicking before that. Hoping if I lower it back down again I'll be okay for my trail run next weekend, don't want to have to swap out a CV out there if I don't need to.

I guess my question is, should I just go ahead and change it out at home this week and lower the ride height back down or will lowering the ride height back down be enough to make the current CV happy again?

I know clicking is a sign of impending CV axle doom so maybe I already know the answer.

 

I was thinking of cutting the front and back this week. What did you use to cut it? Pretty straightforward?

 

A month before the compressor took a shit I paid a mechanic to check the freon and put some in which only cost me around 30, the AC was Ice cold so I wasn't happy when it took a shit.

Fast forward last Sunday I decided to take it apart only 4 bolts and the belt was already off. Took me 15 minutes. I bought a locking chain plier which I didn't really use all I used was a good old impact drill, an auto part store employee told me this trick.

Took the bolt that hold the clutch in and noticed the bearing and the snap ring were totally destroyed. Got a new bearing for 20 and with the locking chain pliers and snap ring I spend less than 50. I took my Truck when I went fishing Friday and yesterday I couldn't be happier about having an Ice cold AC to cool off.

 

clicking can be a few things. But most likely the bearing cage. Id say your axles days could be numbered, are the boots torn? If so, you're perilously low on grease and you'll get to the point you can't rebuild it.

 

Now take that light bar off and put it where it belongs

 

Boots are still good, no grease anywhere. Think I'll just go ahead and swap it out this week before the trail just to be safe...better in the driveway than in the dirt.
