What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Boots are still good, no grease anywhere. Think I'll just go ahead and swap it out this week before the trail just to be safe...better in the driveway than in the dirt.

Yeah that one is, with the green shaft. The other (pass side) is an aftermarket axle, FEQ. That one isn't making any noise

 

Funny because I tore down one I had that was clicking for a rebuild. It ended up being the needle bearings in the tulip but the bearing cage looked fine

Is the clicking at crawl speeds? If so then it might be the bearing cage, but I've never seen them blow on a first gen yet.

 

Yeah the clicking is happening at crawl speeds. I put it in 4lo to make a tight 3 point turn on a steep dirt hill and it clicked so loud at one point I was afraid it snapped (it didn't).

I've had one CV fail and it blew apart on the inner tulip but it never clicked like this before hand. I'm hoping if I lower the ride height a bit it'll be okay, unless the clicking is an indication that damage is already done

 

That makes sense too.

Odd his boots are fine and its doing that though.

 

Yeah clicking that loud at crawl speeds sounds more akin to what @Blackdawg said. The awesome part about rebuilding CV's yourself is you can piece a couple together. I always save my blown ones for parts. And when you do have one develop an issue like this, when you take it apart and see what's up you can equate certain specific noises to specific issues.

I for one am very excellent at hearing a snapped cv/stub shaft/axle by now.

 

About to put new 5100 struts on and new OEM cv axels.

 

I've had an FEQ axle installed for several months now and many wheeling trips and it's held up great so far...I hadn't even heard of FEQ before but the shop that did my wheel bearing installed it. Was skeptical at first but feel pretty good about it now.

The only axle I've actually blown was an OEM CV but it was pretty old.

 

I put a parts one in for now. I must say, they are the WORST to install and take out. Had to use two prybars and a ton of effort to get it to come out vs one short pop from one pry bar to get the oem ones out.

 

Yeah but doesn’t hurt to Install a brand new OEM one

 

I’ve only ever blown up one CV, and it was the bearing cage that let go

 

Mine also exploded at the bearing cage. Was an ORielly deal, so no great loss. Tossed it out and have been rebooting OEM ones from junkyards as spares

I’m still interested in using tundra outers swapped onto Tacoma shafts, I have to believe they’re stronger for such a heavier truck.

 

They are indeed stronger. Not sure swapping them is simple though

 

That's the inner part of the axle going into the diff yeah? If so then that's where my OEM one blew up, clunked like mad in 4wd but the truck ran fine if I kept it in 2wd. Got out and looked under and sure enough the axle looked like a broken wrist at the joint.

That was a used OEM axle I bought off here though (paid top $ too, won't buy used again) barely had it on for a month

 

Bearing cage is the outer by the wheels, the inner is the tulip

 

If the spline count and shaft diameter is the same as the bearing race, it should swap just fine. Would be kinda odd to have the same outer spline count and diameter but the bearing is different.

 

Well...plues the 1 inch i had already cut.....so about 2 inches...maybe a tad more

Very straight forward. Tape. Mark. Cut. First time i used nibblers. Hurt my forearms like a bitch after 2 fenders. Lol. And a fat blister. I bought a HF sheet metal cutter. I was done in 10 minutes. Took longer to tape than to cut. Ill attach the pic
