oh no....TSB-0171-16 Driveline vibration

So I had my truck in for the 4th time for shaky ass when braking. The dealership determined that it "feels like a Tacoma" and is normal.

So why was there 3 repair attempts in the first place lol? For the record this was a dealership separate from the one that did TSB 0023-19 on mine.

It seriously feels like these guys are trained to throw random troubleshooting at a problem, and when nothing sticks, it suddenly is no longer a problem.

 

I will be on my 4th repair attempt if I choose to bring it in again. Are you going to take further action? I’m at a point where I feel like I can’t waste anymore time with it and am just going to ride the lease out, unless my brakes fail and I smash into a wall and die.

 

I took mine apart this weekend (rear drums) and my findings were a lot of rust outside and inside drums. The left rear drum was freewheeling with shoes not even contacting drum, right side was dragging intermittently, but appeared to be adjusted correctly. I believe it was doing all the work and overheated out of round. I cleaned all the bullshit paper crap out of the drum/axle mating surface(WTF is it?) and rust, adjusted to the correct contact/drag and seems to be a lot better but know the right rear drum is out of round. I was a tech for 10 years and did hundreds of brake jobs, why would toyota let something like this leave the factory?! And that paper shit they put in there is a water/rust magnet. I am sure I voided warranty by doing such but they are too stupid to deal with anything so this is my fix till I trade it.

 

Did you happen to take measurements of the axle flange? Supposed to measure between 4.250”-4.252” if it’s more of less vibration will occur.

Any pictures of the process of taking it apart cleaning and putting everything back together? Tempted to try this out on mine, I know for a fact I have a ridiculous amount of rust inside the drums. Question is how does one prevent it?

 

Depends on what Toyota's response is. I opened up a ticket today with corporate and am waiting to hear back.

I am fed up with being told that such a shitty ride is normal. Part of me just wants out of it so I can put money towards an 80 series land cruiser project or something.

I am willing to bet that aftermarket solutions work, but I would be doing a no no in the eyes of warranty, and also spending money to fix a problem I didn't cause.

 

This is so frustrating! I'm glad I'm not the only one with this happening.

I did not take measurements or pictures, didn’t think of it at the time. There is always some rust on the drums but cleaning it best you can will help.

 

I saw that paper shit when my truck was in shop. It was all ripped and nasty. The tech didn’t know what it is there for. If you go through my thread history you can see a post about it I think some guy answered what it was.

 

At this point, has ANYONE had their truck fixed by Toyota for the rumble strip or drive line vibrations? I have the rumble strip and vibrations in my steering wheel, seat, pedals, floorboard.

 

My rumble strip at 20 mph is still there after the axle tsb was preformed . That’s not the problem . Somebody is bound to figure out what’s causing this eventually ...

Repair 1: New rear axle
Repair 2: New drums
Repair 3: New springs and new drums

Result: Still shit.

 

Has aftermarket suspension, axle shims, or carrier bearing shims worked for anyone?

 

I figured. I may be trading mine in today.

This is the most depressing thread I've ever read

Primarily because I've had my axle shafts replaced 3 months ago and the problem came back too. Truck is currently at the dealer (Different than the first one). Waiting to see what happens this time.

I am looking at trading mine in today for a Dodge Ram 1500 Classic.

Not sure I am up to dealing with Toyota and the dealerships to get this "fixed." Seeing as how no ones truck was fixed by Toyota, I dont have high hopes itll get fixed even if i try.

 

It sucks ,I know what you mean. The level/knowledge of technicians at Toyota are a joke and they don’t diagnose anything, just replace parts ,but only when the regional representative okays it. Pathetic!

 

My rumble strip problems started a few months ago. Dealership replaced front diff and it has become more noticeable since. I also had the vibration at 45ish that everyone said that replacing the needle bearing on driver side with egrs bushing would fix. Did that and it made it better but it is still there. Then the rear squeaky leaf springs that the cant fix either has pushed me over the edge. Im gonna trade it in and give up on toyota im thinking

 

Shims may help some people.
Aftermarket suspension and carrier bearing drops are not a good idea IMO

 

Same here, those RAM 1500s are nice! The 5.7 HEMI V8 is awesome too
