    This I agree with ^^^ ,

I also agree that the dropping of the atomic bombs most certainly ended the war quickly and saved the lives of thousands of US , and Japanese troops as well as Japanese civilians .

I also hope that nuclear weapons are never used again .

Not at all. It's just a non-starter "debate".

"In my opinion, the Civil War was a War of Northern Aggression!"
"Yeah, well, nobody cares what you think."

You actually missed my point entirely (or I didn't make it clearly).

Yes, the winner of war determines what the history books say. But quite often, alternate versions still exist.

So, yeah, the "official" party line is that the bombings saved American (and likely Japanese) lives, relative to invading Japan. I'd be curious as to what Japanese think of the bombing - do they agree, or think it's a line of BS.

I heard once that Pearl Harbor wasn't really taught well in Japan - granted, that's not saying much (and with little credibility), but if it isn't taught, that would affect how the Japanese view the A-bomb droppings.

that was probably one of the most racist south park episodes to date, but one of the most hilarious one lol

but, coming from a grandchild of a hiroshima survivor (grandma skipped school that day and caught a train that went behind a mountain when the blast went off), it probably was the best thing to do. seriously, japanese people are crazy. more civillians would have died if there was an invasion....

Sad to say, it was the only way to end a war with a country that doesn't accept defeat or surrender. Also not that it justifies it but take a look at what they did to civilians and POWs throughout Asia.

No, I got it. It's just wrong. Not trying to be rude, but that's just calling it what it is. Nothing personal.

How the Japanese feel about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, much like this entire thread about how people feel about it, is immaterial.

We dropped a bomb so big on them their dicks and eyes shrunk. It was right because we have the biggest stick and we said so.

Not to sound callous or dismissive, but I for one am inclined to lean toward grateful for the bombs on Japan.

It really has nothing to do with right vs. wrong, or even the acts themselves. The resulting escalation of the Cold War (which, yes, would have occurred regardless) prompted intellectual and technological advancements which would have otherwise taken additional decades to produce without impetus.

The argument can be made that these advancements would have developed without the need for dropping atomic weapons, but it is my opinion (and understanding through extensive de-classified documentation) that without the fear produced by real-world examples, the acceleration of these programs would have received greater resistance.

It's a lot easier to get funding for covert development programs when there are fresh images of what could happen to show to Senators and Arms Committee personnel.

Much of what we have today in the forms of technology stems from those strategic programs, eventually funneling their way to the public.

I have a friend that was raised in Japan after the war. She was taught that the US were the agressors and that Japan was the victim. It's not just the winners that get to write the history. She has no knowledge at all of the horrible things that were done by her government during WWII. We are all to painfully aware of the misdeeds of our government. We have some freedom of the press they do not. She was living with my mother in law who lost two uncles in the Bataan Death March. The Japanese girl had never heard of it until I gave her a book about it by guys who lived it. They can cloak themselves as the "victims" of the A-bomb but they brought it on themselves. You can't ignore the fact that if they had not bombed Pearl Harbor we would not have dropped Atomic bombs on their cities.

We didn't start the war but we damn sure finished it.

^ you are absolutely right, a lot of Asia is pissed off at Japan today not because of what they did during WWII, but because they are pretending it never happened

^ IIRC, someone earlier posted that America told the locals to evacuate the bomb sites way before the bombs were dropped, however, the Nazi's rounded up innocent people with the intent of murdering them.

America targeted strategic locations with death toll of an estimated 100,000

Germany targeted a specific religious/social group with death toll of an estimated 6,000,000

This move saved thousands of american lifes, the japanese were not going to give up. Everyone who nay says it wants to be a referee but when it comes down to it if your an american it was in the best interest of your team. Might sound cruel but its true, we've been fighting wars since the begining of time and it always comes down to what packs the bigger punch, How do you think the other army felt when humans unleashed the first catapult.

Ah, but what you are failing to realize is that one would have continued to kill innocent people and the other was to prevent and end innocent people from continuing to be killed. It's so easy to arm chair quaterback this situation 60 years after the fact. Japanese of the period did not believe in surrender. Period. Iwo taught us this. They also preferred death to surrender as it was considered "honorable." They did not value life as we do. If you surrendered you lossed all rights and were considered sub human. This was their justification for their brutality, war crimes, forced slavery, and all things indecent and inhumane. Do you honestly think they would have voluntarily surrendered? Do you think it would have been worth additional thousands of American lives to have invaded Japan? Do you think we did the right thing? Do we speak Japanese or English?
