There are many reports of the next Tundra & Tacoma using the same platform (F1) and the next Tundra coming out around 2021. Using the same platform does make it a little easier to bring out other models. So when will the next Tacoma come out? We all know, Toyota normally runs their pickups in about 10 year cycles, so 2026. Now there are already rumors of a new Ranger around 2022, because their world truck is due then and a redesigned Frontier is reported coming around then, plus maybe a new midsize Dodge and what about Chevy/GMC. So does Toyota just jump in headfirst and come out with a new truck before 2026?

Sorry I can’t tell you, but my crystal ball is broke. I will be looking at getting a new midsize truck around 2022, so I guess I just have to wait.

They should really take their time with releasing this new truck. So many minute details where things can go wrong with these new electronic/mechanical designs that keep trying to push performance to the limit..

Define better or worse, what are your criteria? Obviously "better" is subjective, but for me I added all the options I've seen that come with the 2020 unit, less the simulated 360 camera, OE software, an 8" screen for <$400. I ended up with the same remaining options that stock has, but with more apps, more power, more in/outputs, more EQ tuning, a flat sound curve with no attenuation at higher volume, and more.

Doing a quick search right now shows the 2016+ Factory radio at about $2400 for the base model w/o nav. The dash pieces that would be needed to fit the 8" display, based off the cost of the current dash parts, is about $240. All of the Nav units are about 4k. So, I feel confident I could add everything else the stock unit will have, other than the software, for the remaining ~$3800 I would have to spend.

A guy at Toyota shop that sees a lot of different makes indicated that Toyota is usually late to the party with respect to electronics and tech, compared to other makers, because they stress test things longer.

@pinem56 We give Toyota too much credit. They are late with tech or even LED drl in the 3rd gen because they havent HAD to add these things to sell. Toyota dominated the mid sized segment. Unless the Ranger or a new Frontier comes out and taked sales away, expect the same from Toyota. Tacomas could have come with all drum brakes and they would still sell. Toyota rides this wave and never feels pressured to kiss consumer's asses or entice them. Chevy, Ford, Dodge, etc all want to steal sales so they add whatever they can think of to the trucks.

@NMBruce Great observation. I believe times have changed though. 5-7 years is the new 10 year generational cycle. Manufacturers are no longer waiting 10 years. The competition is so fierce now a days. Happened to me with my brand new 2013 Accord. Lasted 5 years and then a new generation was introduced. What do I think will happen? The new Tundra will be released in 2021 and then a 4th gen Tacoma will be introduced in 2022-2023 or so with that shared platform.

I hope your right and a new Tacoma comes out in 2022 and has what I want, that could fit my plans

I’m definitely trading my 2018 Pro for a 2020 Pro when they’re released. I’m extremely excited about all the features I’ll be gaining. Gotta love Tacoma’s having the highest resale value in the entire automotive industry. It definitely makes these type of decisions a lot easier.

Same for me. I purchased my 2018 on March 10th last year and was in love until I saw all the stuff the 2020 has that I don’t have. I’m happy I hadn’t gone to crazy on mods yet.

Looks like most people are happiest about the power seats, I would be also, but they need to make the passenger seat as adjustable, hey Toyota many of us have other people in the truck.
As for Car Play, that is fixable by a nice aftermarket head unit, I have Car Play in my 06 GX470 and a system where I don’t have to be stopped to put in routes or look up gas station and stuff unless I am in the city or don’t have a passenger. My Pioneer unit is so much easier to use than my girlfriends GX460

For someone like me who has yet to even own a Tacoma I was happy by the 2020 upgrades as it added things I wanted that other brands offered. I have kind of been in the market for a truck for about a year but was really waiting for the Ranger to come out and then see what Toyota was going to do for 2020. Having driven the Ranger and Colorado the Tacoma is going to be my truck and cant wait for the 2020 Tacoma to be released!

One thing I am curious about is if any more/different colors will be available. Blue is my favorite color and while I think Voodoo Blue looks cool when I see it I have a feeling overtime I would tire of it. Really hope they bring back the metallic style blue from years past or even the Orange color which I also like.

I am in the market for a new truck and I will wait for the 2020 Tacoma. It has everything I need.

Do you guys think Toyota will increase the price?

I really hope CarPlay is wirelessly enabled. I don’t want a USB cable. Not a giant deal. But why wouldn’t Toyota insist on that too? It couldn’t be cost-prohibitive. And they have like 6 months or so to do it...and that is IF they waited until now to decide. Plenty of time.

Wired AA and Apple CarPlay. To be fair, not many OEM headunits in the auto industry have wireless setups. A few Audi, BMW, and the only Toyota that has it.. the Supra (thanks to BMW).

Still seems stupid to me. It is 100 percent doable. And with existing tech. Just tell Google and Apple that the first one to figure out how to do it at no additional cost gets exclusive rights to all Toyota/Lexus vehicles. They’d figure it out before lunch tomorrow.
