Chuckers Expedition Taco build thread

Mounted the iPad today. This is my primary Nav tool, and is supported by a Ram mount attached to an otter box defender case.

The screws are from a gate hardware kit, and the block is made out of a fence board. These were parts left over from a fence project, but worked perfect.

Marked through the holes on the ram mount base and drilled pilot holes with an 1/8" bit.

View from the underside. I had to trim an additional 3/8" off the long side of the block to put the glovebox back together.

Several possible configurations.

 

Took the ferry out to Okracoke Island to poke around a little and drive on the sand. Turned out there was still some hurricane damage so a lot of sections were closed off, and we missed the seasonal areas so even more OHV sections were closed off. Still a cool place though.

 

Got the CB installed and Bluetooth microphone for my phone Look pretty good I think, but it gets pretty static covered when my LEDs are on

 

Found a cool spot to wheel nearby the house. Lots of sand and some obstacles, but I had a real bad rub on my ARB bumper.

 

I marked off amount of bumper that needed to come off to get proper clearance and taped it to give myself a good line to follow. Tried to match the natural angle of the bumper. There’s some plastic underneath that I had to trim, and then I ground down all the edges to make it smooth.It completely eliminated my rub. Lock to lock no rubs even in some rough terrain. Here’s a couple more after photos.

 

What nav app are you using on your iPad? I’ve been running Topo Maps because I can download the maps and don’t need cell service. It works pretty well with my Bad Elf GPS receiver, but always looking for an upgrade.

 

Went back to the spot to see if I could make it rub again, and got a chance to test out my knock off maxtraxx. They performed great.

 

I’m running Hema and Gaia. I tend to run both because I’m still deciding which I want to take on a trip out west in September. I’m leaning toward Gaia. It’s a subscription and they make it for apple or android. I run an LTE iPad so I don’t need an external antenna since it’s got gps built in

 

Thanks, I’ll look into those. I was cheap when I got my iPad, and went with the basic. But the Bad Elf plugs in and rides on the dash. I can pick up 15 to 30 satellites most of the time.

 

That’s really good. I don’t know how many I’m picking up, but it seems to work fine. I got mine refurbished off Amazon.

 

It tends to shine above tree line, but that’s kinda standard for most gps units.

 

Over Friday and Saturday I built a bed deck with some storage for tools, recovery gear, spare parts, hilift jack (don’t have one yet), and cooktop.

 

Again, we took it on a little camping trip to test everything out. Too bad it wound up being a nightmare, but the bed deck and cooktop worked great and we made a new friend. @reefclimber

 

Packed up and went exploring. The trails got pretty rough and eventually we slipped into a hole we couldn’t get out of Trouble begins here.We started digging and didn’t give up for 4 hours but it was buried. Traction boards didn’t help at all. This hole was deep and the walls went straight down. I called a tow truck but it got stuck tooEventually we got everybody out. We needed the tow truck and @reefclimber hooked together pulling to drag my truck out.7 hours later.. I’ll forget this day a long time before the wife will.

Thanks! Amazon has a good price with free shipping. I’ve seen some deals on used ones, but I like new things on an old truck.

 

@Malek 100% do the bumper cuts I did unless you’re running stock tires and wheels. It took 20 minutes, a cutting wheel and a can of black paint.

 

This build makes me miss my first gen. Wasn't speedy, and wasn't powerful, but it was the little engine that could 99% of the time.

 

The TRD PRO wheels in silver on a double cab are SICK!
