Yeah I’m super excited. Figured it would give me plenty of bike to ride everything we have in socal. Can’t beat the components for the price. Sucks about the wait time, but I’m recovering from a pinched nerve so wouldn’t be able to ride anyways haha. Was going to let them put it together for me but decided to save the 65 bucks, doesn’t look that hard to do lol.

Anything with MIPS... waking up in the back of an ambulance to this view and, then again in an ER w/ the name Blackberry Doe on your wristband is highly discouraged...

This was the helmet after... cracked all the way through from a broken paver in the greenway that I didn't see until it was too late.

I'm in the market for a gravel bike, and there are some sweet rides posted on CL and PB, but I'll be damned if they aren't all being sold by the tiniest dudes on the planet.

Anything with MIPS technology and you'll be fine. Any of the big names make good shit but another fringe brand is Kali Protectives. They've got a lifetime warranty and will replace your old lid

I don't need a helmet right now but will consider them in the future. You should check out Hand-Up Gloves. They're local for me and pretty cheap vs the competition

It's all about what fits you best though

I still haven’t ridden there. I heard it’s sketchy as fuck. I think they are building legal trails there too.

Many parts of the mountain the dirt roadies will go on and they have alot of tough endurance trails with good up and downs. The gravity portion is def for the skilled rider who has experience in dealing with DH and features that have been there since the 90s. My buddies are always maintaining those trails and just recently have they been approved to where folks can now talk about them openly without keeping it all underground. If you want to be a better descender, its some of the best natural training out there, but I would roll with someone who has been so you know what to expect.

That’s pretty sweet, I haven’t spoken with anyone that’s ridden there in years. It’s cool that they got it approved though. People used to be so protective, which is understandable based on what I know. I’m used to the natural stuff riding out in the National Forest but the jumps are what I’m not good at haha

Not sure if you are familiar with the gravity scene but at resorts and stuff you always have to sign a waiver in the event you get hurt. Its no different in public trails and for a long time DH on any public environment was strongly discouraged cause of law suit potential. Because of this, they kept it tight lipped so the public didnt know where to find them unless you were in the scene and so the beaurocrats didnt get involved either. I am glad that they are finally coming together, but one of the biggest threats are the local hikers that try to challenge themselves by walking up a shuttle trail. They think they have a right to be there although no signage dictates thats its an approved hiking trail...and to prevent bikers they would plant booby traps for a long time. These issues helped lead to something needing to be done as bikers didnt have a right to police it since they werent technically supposed to be there, yet there was a significant danger. Now the state has planted a few remote cameras in key locations so if some grandma gets an indication to leave her mark...she can now get cited and possibly a hefty fine along with further prosecution. Crazy part is I think an elderly woman even went to jail for a day or two over this as many times you would find some nail strip right after a landing on a jump, removed foundation on the back side of a kicker, but was not obvious from the front, broken tree limbs in crucial blind turns.

Needless to say, I dont have much regard for hikers over the experience there...especially when they are on trails that they can barely get up as it is.

People can get really creative with their booby traps. Local hikers and equestrians have always been a threat though, especially in the National Forest. It’s definitely key to make sure everyone knows the rules. Unfortunately it tends to be us on bikes that get the shit end of the stick even though a lot of bikers tend to give back the most from what I’ve seen.

Hopefully they can work it out over there. It just sucks that bike only trails are so hard to push for. Luckily fountainhead is a great example of the potential of bike only trails and it’s pretty close to the shed.

the usual, Best you can afford , you only have one head. I really like the fit of the POC helmet I got for my big head and usually change them out every 2-3 years they dont last forever . Foam hot car interiors and UV aren't good for them.

Fountain head is run very well and the management there make things very visible and things are just generally trusted to be run right so the community believes in the rules there. That said, the community has grown up with this mentality and it is nice to see the hikers and bikers respect each other. I think part of the problem with shed is you get guys who are doing the gravity stuff and hitting things at speed. Its much more difficult to stop when a hiker is randomly on a trail and then one guy diverts off trail, one crashes, and another just says fuck it and barely gets by while the hiker is like...why cant i be here, but you wont see that at fountain head as its just not that aggresive of terrain wise to create that situation. Like most things, biking to a degree is a privalege and so folks are always testing that right and seeing if they can help prevent us from riding in spots although the majority have minimal problems with the public. One thing I will say though is certain regions are becoming more aware of the clash in hikers and it seems some biking communities are getting more opportunity in terms of rights for it. Other places like Marin county in CA police actually sit on trails with radar guns and zap people for going too fast and get a ticket. So the jurisdiction just really depends if there are any bikers in the leadership and if they can convey the importance of biking in a respectful and plausible way. You would be surprised how some of the bikers really paint us in a bad light, when they mean to fight for us at the end of the day but fail to see they are conveying themselves.

You’re definitely right about the DH, not exactly fair to compare that to fountainhead. But non-bikers won’t be able to tell the difference really. Leadership is key though. Have you seen the Local Loam series by Jeff Kendall weed? He made a video about Austin, TX that was super interesting, kind of a good example for what should be done at the shed being closer to a suburb.

Sounds like you’ve got a POC head haha. Bell and Giro fit me best. I might try a Smith for my next helmet.
