id definitely tape where you are going to cut. then use the cryocyanic (sp?) glue. then let dry and sand down to a shiny finish. Ive used something like this for acrylic pen blanks and they turn out nice.

I picked up a 5 gallon chamber for $105 from Amazon and a HF vacuum pump. The combo works well.
You can get silicone casting molds pretty cheaply in various shapes.

I'm thinking about using a dark, if not black, unsanded grout between the caps to fill the space, then pour the epoxy on. I'm wondering if that will make the caps colors pop even more.

 

You could use a small amount of black colored epoxy to do the same thing. Epoxy is all about keeping things smooth and contaminates out.

I'd double check but I think using grout could lead to a few more headaches than its worth. Unsanded would definitely be the better route if you still want to go that way but I'd be worried about excess air bubbling out during the cure, as well as a bunch of dust etc clouding the finished pour.
@My Name is Rahl suggestion of using black dye in a shallow pour would be the way I'd go.

 

Good points. I saw a cap table with grout but no resin. It looked great but I want to keep the table mostly outside, hence the reason for the resin. I understand that resin can yellow from sun exposure.

I have the older DeWalt 744X saws

 

I run a dado blade on my DeWalt portables , no issue except making a homemade throat plate

 

just make sure the fence hooks on the opposite side. If it rests on top of it its going to move ever so slightly. You can also clamp the fence on the opposite side once you have your cutting width set that way it doesnt move. if that makes sense...

 

I think I've gone up to 1/2" , maybe 5/8". Its possible the older saws like the ones I have could have a longer arbour though , not sure .

 

The DeWalt saws have a rack & pinion fence that engages on both ends of the fence . The system is also adjustable in case it ever goes out of whack .
