I feel like maybe to much paint correction happened at either the factory or dealer and cause premature failure...

all auto manufactures have had these issues at one point or another. i can remember GM and ford stripping vehicles to bare metal and repainting them in the mid to late 80's because the paints were peeling off the new style primer that was being used. i've seen the clear deteriorating like posted here on many many cars over the years from just about every make.. i've seen it a lot on a charcoal grey and darker blues....

if its been narrowed down to a pretty specific VIN range then they probably got a bad or mis-matched batch of paint/clear and or chemicals..

toyota should take care of it being under factory warranty still.. needs to go down to bare metal, prepped properly and repainted to make sure its repaired the right way.. i'd want the entire truck done though.. those just blowing in a roof and hood jobs rarely look right when finished..

I agree Abodyjoe! That's why I'm pretty upset that Toyota has only offered to fix the affected areas. Maybe they'll change their tune once I've had my truck looked at by a Toyota approved Body shop. We'll see.

Hey seadog, I'm guessing that the lack of response means you're not comfortable giving out your VIN and I get that. If it will help at all, you could email it to me privately at mushmorten@aol.com. Again thanks for any help you can provide. One other thing, in another post of yours you mentioned that your dealer said that this issue has been narrowed down to a certain VIN range of vehicles. Did he/she happen to divulge that range or how many vehicles were affected? Again, just looking for as much ammunition I can get my hands on to use in my case with Toyota. This business if only wanting to fix the affected areas is really making my blood boil and it should for the rest of us in here as well. Thanks!

I would also like to know the VIN range. My paint looks good now but I'm starting to lose sleep over this.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
That is true, but in the past years -- I would use chart to find out where other brands were made. I am not sure all brands do as the Tacoma does, and also you can't always open the door if the car does not belong to you. Good point though!

That sucks? I'm in Greeley, CO and I took my Tacoma in last October. It took until November to get the final ok to paint, then until March to actually get an appointment for the paint. Check the top of your doors right below the black seals for the side windows. Mine was showing failure there as well.

These were about 6 months after I first noticed the roof beginning to fade.

Actually Chase, I agree with you that it probably doesn't help my case at all but it can't hurt and there's a lot of valuable information that's been put out on this site regarding this issue that I've collected and have passed along to my Service Manager. Anything I can do that MIGHT possibly help my case, I'm going to do. Thanks for the valuable input though! Preesh!

............and Seadog, thanks again for the additional info on your experience. That definitely helps and if you change your mind about your VIN # feel free to email it to me at mushmorten@aol.com. No worries either way.

FYI, Ehrlich Toyota in Greeley, CO handled my claim. Gaige Tuma was my service rep. They MIGHT be able to help.

Hey bud, funny you should post today cuz I actually just heard back from the body shop this a.m.! They finished their assessment of my vehicle and they're going to recommend to Toyota that the entire cab be stripped, repainted and re-clear coated. Evidently there were additional areas on the fenders and doors that they noticed that I missed. So they'd remove the bed and then use what they referred to as a blended paint formula that they feel confident will match the bed well. Don't know what that means but it's better than just painting the hood and roof. Hopefully Toyota won't push back on this once they receive the report from the body shop. We'll see! Good to hear from ya!
