Hesitant to post this since one of you is a client of my current job. Wish me luck, about to apply for a job that is slightly out of reach for me on paper, but in real life my skill set and knowledge is more than qualified for the job. Something I have wanted to do for the last few years but there has not been many opportunities popping up in the Valley. Now with a ton of insurance companies coming to town with regional offices opportunities are becoming better.

Debating writing a cover letter that makes my individual strengths standout since on paper my previous job titles don't necessarily match the requirements of the posting. I'd love to find someone who's a corporate hr recruiter or gatekeeper to pick their brain on if this is a good idea or no. Sometimes just getting to the interview stage is the hardest battle.

 

I'm not a recruiter, but in my experience the custom cover letter is almost always a very good move especially if it is more of a professional level position. That and a courteous follow up if you don't hear back in a couple of days. Making sure to show interest, but not desperation in any way.

 

The follow up is always the hard part with corporate gigs. Just a faceless nameless procedure chain of events with someone ill never meet on the other end if a computer playing gatekeeper controlling my fate in even getting the chance to meet the hiring manager. One of the reasons I've worked for small business over the last 8 years. The downside to my current situation is limited growth.

Nowadays your resume won’t even be looked at by a person until the very end. It’s fed into an algorithm to determine if your resume has key verbs and statements the company wants for that role. I was just talking to a recruiter at my place of employment about it, Skynet is here.
