OP, I’ve had the tune for a few days and an tell a big difference in my truck. I’m running 91 base with 93 octane gas and my fist tank averaged 20.8mpg, up from 19.1. Im on spacer lift, stock tires, with sliders and skid plates. Shifting is better as well as mpg. I want to try 91 performance tune, but I’m going to run 5 tanks this way before I do.

I found the TSB improved the engine's performance significantly.

I would expect the same from OVtune's 91 octane tune. It's my next purchase for sure.

While I agree that the coding itself won't change after flash, the truck's response ABSOLUTELY changes.. over hundreds of miles. I doubt my post will convince you, but it's the truth. Not to be a dick, but if you ran the tune you wouldn't be arguing this point.
Even the M/T changes after flash... and that's without the bi-polar shifty thing that resides behind the engine!
    It's not a placebo effect.

I strongly disagree. The average consumer does not want or need a performance tune. I am happy with both the performance and MPG of my truck in stock form. I wasn't even aware of a "shifting problem" until I read about it on this forum. :crapstorm:

That's fair. If you like the way your truck drives in stock form, that's great and I believe you like it.

Some don't though, and thankfully there's a fix for that.

See how I didn't judge you for liking it?

Edit: Just to set the record straight somewhat, all of the tunes are not "performance" files. Changing the driveability is still the main point of the 87 Octane tunes TBH.

...and that's a Toyota file. I wonder why they did that lol :notsure:

The OVtune is a good enhancement for those folks that need it. However, (this applies to tunes in general.) I think that a large number of performance tunes are bought by people who don't need them. For those people a tune is wasted money.

    From the judgment free zone...

If im perfectly honest, reading through the threads and sifting through all the rose tinted glasses responses, and my main takeaway is that $700 is still halfway to new gears which will make a way bigger difference than the tune. Ive also wheeled with guys who have mentioned that the throttle is so twitchy with the tune that it makes it hard for them to go through technical stuff, which is kind of a turn off.

If it was like $3-400, id probably try it.

There's no doubt some ppl tune their rig just because they can. If they didn't have a real reason to, then yup it's probably a waste of their money.

Speaking of which, I won't be bothering with a 6-inch lift, 35's , 5.29's, high clearance bumpers or... raptor style grille lights. That would be a waste of MY money, as I don't need any of that stuff.

I don't judge people who do, it's their money

I can believe the wheeling/twitchy throttle comment. I don't do anything crazy, but you need a light touch in 4lo (speaking from a M/T point of view). It also depends on which file you are running.
FYI, Mat is working on a system wherein the ECU will use different tables when you are in 4WD (which ones and how many I have no clue). That's like two tunes in one. Not much detail on that yet.

On the street though, the throttle response is good IMO.

Edit: The throttle response is good EXCEPT when blipping for downshift rev match. Stopped/clutch in it's very good, but as soon as you're moving it starts to vary (delay-wise). Mat is aware and is working on a fix for that too (if the slushbox guys EVER stop bothering him lol).

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just put it in S5 instead of regearing? And wouldn't 5.29s or 4.88s make 1st or 2nd gear too low? I've had the tune since first release and the current version is a huge improvement over stock.

    Well said.

BTW: My raptor lights have improved my shifting immediately. Now I just park it I the driveway and ogle over it. Sitting in Park the transmission makes no rough or unexpected shifts at all. :sandwich:

Here is what I don't understand about the tune. If it is so simple as making a new tune to fix the issues, why doesn't Toyota just adopt it. It seems to me that if anyone has the resources to create a perfect tune that Toyota should be able to replicate what a guy in his garage is doing.

That kind of thinking is what is keeping me from spending $700 on the tune. I kind of feel that those that are talking about how great it is post tune are the same guys that think that they are getting better performance because they run high octane gas or the same guys that think that running their heater hurts their gas mileage.

A tune helps SOME people IF they NEED it. For others its kinda' like "If it ain't broke, let's fix it until it IS broke." :crapstorm:

Take into consideration how much money it would cost toyota to update thousands upon thousands of trucks. They only fix something if it is required.

Maybe, but the 3.90s or whatever the auto guys get is still stupid low for a truck with a high revving engine, IMO. The 4.30s in the Manual are passable, at least. Honestly, if Toyota just put the 4.30 rear end in everything regardless of transmissions I don't think anyone would have ever complained about the transmission in the autos to begin with. I could chirp my tires when I was stock whenever I wanted
