Lol I went there last summer (Warren, Youngstown) and it was actually very fun. Never knew that was where Packard's were made. I wouldn't want to live there but it's a fun place to visit. Sad to see what happened after all of the industry moved away. Actually going up there again this summer.

I'm in Indiana. (Not by choice...)

This whole region blows, really. The weather sucks. 7 months of shit weather vs. 5 months of acceptable weather.

There are a lot of old factories that built a lot of iconic products in the midwest.

They are empty now, or at a capacity that is a fraction of the hay days.

The town that I live in was once nicknamed "Little Detroit". (They are still proud of that....for some reason....)

In a county of about 30-40,000 people, this town was once the home to the following factories...

    Auburn (Automobiles)
    Ford
    Visteon
    Crown Lift Trucks
    MEG
D&M (shelving and racks for KMART, WALMART etc.)
    Stant (gas caps, thermostats)
    Roots (industrial blowers)

and had a MAJOR union presence. Once the government took over the responsibilities of the unions, they fought hard to remain relevant here. This lead to absolutely horrid labor relations and records of that are easily accessible. This fact makes it obvious that most companies dont want to relocate here, even though we are smack dab in the middle of quite a few major interstates.

You can tell as you drive through this little town that there was once a great deal of money that flowed through the hands of it's citizens. Massive churches and club buildings still stand. The courthouse is HUGE and many buildings are made out of stone.

I'm in "northeast central" which just means that I am about an hour and a half northeast of Columbus.

    So does Indiana...

At least Indiana made Hoosier Cabinets!

Indiana and Ohio were big contributors to the building of this nation. Steel mills and such in the northern part of the states had easy access to ports. Also, you have I70 that runs East and West intersected by I65 and I75 that ran North and South.

Major universities (Purdue with engineering and OSU with a prestigious Veterinarian program along with IU, Notre Dame and UC)

Agriculture is firmly rooted (haha. get it?) with very fertile soil and optimal moisture.

Manufacturing simply left the area due to labor relations, changing economies and regulatory climates changing. Toss in Nafta and this area had NO chance.

Now, I'm simply convinced that any CEO would hate to relocate here simply due to the fact that the actual climate is much better in the south. Pair that with the legislative and governmental climates with all the tax breaks and absence of poor labor relations, there is no reason to move a company here.
