Its no where near like a big city (LA, SFO, Miami...) but New Orleans got some messed up driving... North is not north, west is sometimes south...

Seems we're the opposite. The furthest in to LA I go these days is Long Beach, and I always end up taking PCH from Huntington because 405. Nothing in LA excites me, parking sucks everywhere that's "worth" going. If I'm driving anywhere, it's south to San Diego. My ex 2 years ago lived just above downtown, pretty much next to echo park (15 min drive for 2 miles), I haven't been back since.

Good thing I don't plan on ever going to New Orleans, that's ridiculous.

Just a heads up heading west on the 91 from around 7AM-9AM is horrible.
The same goes for heading east from around 2ish PM.

Depending on where you’re going in Santa Ana you’ll probably have to take the 55 and I’d avoid that in the morning too.

x2 on this. If you can wait until around 10am, traffic gets less bad then. The best window of least amount of traffic will be 10ish - 3 to get in and out of here

Holy crap you aren’t kidding. Just set the map/gps and there’s almost continuous red once I get in closer on 15, 90 and 55.

Adjusted schedule. Getting to rest a little longer now.

If it’s a quick trip and aren’t staying long, plenty of hotels by the airport (John Wayne), Anaheim, and Fullerton. Santa Ana isn’t too bad if you’re stayin in south coast as mentioned in the second post, but I’d stay away from downtown a lot. The homeless issue is still a mess. If you need help getting around or just need a ride from the airport, I could be of assistance. Just depends on dates and my work schedule.

The area you’re in is extra brutal. Housing is cheaper out there and on the way in, so everyone lives there but then drives to work where you’re headed. Like I said, about 10 it’s usually cleared up or much lighter, and then you’ve got till around 3 and by 330/4 there’s traffic again. Good luck. Safe travels.

If you're still in the area and if you want the best cup of coffee you've ever had you should go to Hopper & Burr in downtown Santa Ana. There is another place down the street that is called Native Sons and it has a great collection of local beers on tap. It is downtown Santa Ana, but I really dont think it is as bad as people are making it out to be

Never heard of Hopper & Burr, I'll have to check it out if I ever drive through Santa Ana. Native Sons is a really cool spot. Went there for the first time a few weeks ago. It's not that bad, but it definitely feels sketchy while down there. There are always a lot five-oh down there though so it makes it feel somewhat safer? I had jury duty last week, walked from the courthouse to 4th st market, wasn't that bad lol

Yeah! you can basically skip a stone from native sons to Hopper & Burr (i think its one short block away). I've never felt like my life was in danger in DTSA though, like you mentioned there is always cops walking around. I can definitely understand how people feel uncomfortable just walking around there because of the homeless, but they have never bothered me.

You’ve got me craving to try this Hopper & Burr place. I’m about done with this car deal and hope I can swing by for a to-go joe for the road trip home.

I’ve lived in a few larger cities (Tampa, Detroit, New Orleans...) and two hugely tourist areas (Yose & Zion). I’ve dealt with all kinds of traffic. Everyone on the road at once, tourist drivers doing 15 under the limit in their rental RV...

Gotta give props to the drivers that I saw today. There were several slow downs on 15, 91, 55 but I did not see any angry folks, road ragers, darters... everyone seemed to understand this was normal and just ride it out, nothing to get upset about.
Anomaly? Probably. But it was actually not so bad to deal with as I was anticipating. (This was after 930am).

Not looking good to get outbound before 3 though... my opinion could change. :D
