So funny seeing grip comparison on east coast rocks vs moab slick rock. It's more intimidating than you realize especially when you pull up to it. Especially when you witness this right after you break.

Oh and to make this post a little more relevant I received the last piece of my puzzle for frame box/shock relocate/u bolt flip/ add a leaf.

Stronger cvs means broken diff. Getting additional travel without making the diff the "fuse" would be neat though.

 

Well if you swap the tundra outer then problem solved.

I mean Silas and...Shit...idk Hack or whatever ran 37s on stock everything for a long time..but they popped CVs all the time haha

very true. The front locker should help a bit. But something has to give at some point.

 

I've always wondered why our CVs are so breakable in the grand scheme of things, must be because they're required to articulate so much, cause even the crappy NA CVs in my Z hold up to repeated clutch drops at 450-500hp even with drag slicks. The do explode quite fantastically around 550 hp though and it is a sight to behold

 

What are you guys doing wrong, I still haven't broken a CV.

 

I've only busted cheapo CVs, never an OEM one... I'll chalk that up as half a breakage

 

Is the rack mount bent too?

Yeah, mine was.

That is what I just did. BB is one company still supporting 1st gens. I do wonder how long that will continue.

A 1964 Nova is old. Betcha I can find what ever parts you want for one.

A 1980 Jeep CJ-7 is old... same

Hell the Toyota Pickup is older than the 1st Gen Tacoma... seems there's more aftermarket support for them than Tacoma.

 

I think a lot about this too. Aftermarket parts are stagnant and sometimes dwindling. Toyota has been really cool about still having OEM parts for us though, which not a lot of companies do. It's only required for 10 years after manufacture. Not a lot in the catalog that has gone NLA. But yeah, I think the first gen was too late to get the overlanding support in full and for the longest time too expensive to get the weekend wheeler-beater treatment too like the pickups... Now they're just old Toyotas and get glossed over for most jobs other than nice pickup for a young dude or a middle aged guy that needs to make dump runs.

It's not just a function of age though because parts, especially aftermarket, for the LCs are still easy to come by and some of those are nearing 40 years old.

@sk8rjess is who you are thinking about. All I see him doing these days is posting glam shots on insta.

And I've proven the Stub would be the other fuse. With a front locker I think the front diff is pretty beefy. Still want to experiment with a non add tube/shaft, gotta keep my eyes peeled for a non ADD diff.

I'll find plenty of stuff for you to break your shit on out here.

Yeah maybe I should grab another skid row one while I can. Though if they do ever stop, building one is still always an option. Or give you more of an excuse to SAS.

She's never been a missing piece, but I didn't know how much I needed her till I had her.

Sure but a Nova is a desirable classic domestic car.

Same with the Jeep....for some stupid reason.

Also you pay out the ass for some of those parts which are made be specific resoration companys. They are also stupid simple vehicles compared to even our Tacomas.

THe old yotas are going strong but the market is still there. They are still very popular rock crawler platforms. Which lets be honest is a huge mostly custom job anyways.

They are also cheap to buy and cheap to build for the most part. Our damn trucks are still going for 6-16k lol

 

I should've grabbed a pic of it before I put it back on the truck, was your twisted too? The front of the skid lines up okay but the back twists to the passenger side pretty substantially (can see it from under the truck).

I was afraid maybe something underneath the truck like the steering rack itself was out of alignment, but from what I can eyeball that all looks okay. I think the mount for the skid plate itself is just bent which caused the skid to twist over time, either from a hard hit or me using the floor jack too far back on it once.

 

Oh, and once you start throwing the torque of a crawl box in, bound up with a locker on, any of our components can snap like a tooth pick in a second. Seen a rear axle shaft and the entire ADD tube snap that way.

 

Bingo! ^This^ is what wrecks it.

Can't believe how much our trucks are going for still. I've been looking for my youngest son. He wants a 1st or 2nd Gen, and damn.

Yeah a little bit. I was still able to attach the front and then use the floor jack to push that right rear corner up enough to attach the other mounting points tho.
