Yeah I was the opposite, watched Endgame then S8E03 and was underwhelmed by that. All depends on the viewing order I guess

 

I try not to consider the completion/incompletion of a character's arc when considering future events. Takes some of the fun out of it, to me.

If you escape this world to enter theirs, those characters aren't living on an arc. Arya, as a character to the outside observer, may have completed her arc, but Arya as a person, wouldn't have an arc to consider. She still wants to kill Cersi. Whether or not she gets the chance, I don't know. I think she's got the greatest combination of desire and ability of any of the remaining folks in Winterfell. Jamie might get the best opportunity, though, if Cersi opts to confront him.

I don't think many missed the point that, fundamentally, the Night King wanted to kill Bran to erase the memory of mankind. Anyone who watched episode 2 got that part. The problem, if you will, is that the entire purpose of 7+ seasons of Bran and the Night King was explained in basically two lines of dialogue with no follow up.

Think how HUGE of a part of the overall story Bran and the Night King are. The biggest, mostly deadly, and most important battle in the history of Westeros revolved around the Night King trying to kill Bran and all we know about the "why" is what we learned in those two lines of dialogue.

The question for what the Night King's motivation is can be easily answered with him wanting to wipe out all of humanity, including its history. Follow that up with another "why?" and we haven't really been left with an answer.

Either way, now that the Night King chapter is closed, I really don't care enough to learn the "why", unless it somehow has bearing on the rest of the saga (though I don't see how it could if all white walkers are dead).

I didn't gather from the episode that the Dothraki acted on their own?

I'm in the camp that didn't understand the battle strategy. Seemed like they had more people outside of their perimeter than inside of it. I've heard that Dany kind of circumvented the plans in discussions since the show aired, but I didn't pick up on it during the episode. Jon did grab her arm and tell her the Night King was coming after she saw Jorah in trouble. I suppose that was the only indication. If her taking off like that made the rest of their strategy collapse, it was hard to tell that was the linchpin. It just seemed like they weren't using their resources effectively.

No worries, though. That badass Arya saved the day .

 

Also I don't know if the show will ever get to the "Why?" Aspect of the NK but I bet you eventually the spin-off show The Long Night will get to it.

I just realized that Jon doesn't like to stick to the plan during battle, he always has to go run off and do something stupid. Hardhome-he has to go back and get the dragon glass. Battle of the Bastards-he runs out to save Rickon. Battle at Winterfell-he follows Dany out with the Dragons when he needs to hold off

Not knocking him just something I've noticed

 

I understand why the battle went down the way it did. See, it's just a show and they needed to cut down on bodies to make the battle for the throne that much more suspenseful. Wouldn't be much of battle if they stomped on the NK and his army.

 

Except Cersei has a huge army now with the Golden Company. Will be even bigger if she finds some elephants

 

I have zero ideas as to why she was so fixated on elephants.

I think the Golden Company are going to ditch Cersei. Maybe Jaime & Tyrion will convince them or they will see the dragons and skidaddle. Yara I bet kills Euron and takes his fleet.

 

Ships + Dragons = lots of swimming and no more ships.

 

There were waaaaay too many soldiers to all fit inside the walls of Winterfell and defend from there. It's not really a very big place. Yes, the trench could have been farther out to give more room inside it, but digging trenches without heavy equipment is hard, time consuming work. I think they built the best defenses they could in the time given. It's pretty clear the plan was for the dragons to light the trench, but with the storm the Night King created communication between those on the ground and the dragon riders was lacking.
