I've found that the trails where I actually needed a front locker are difficult enough to put the truck in a compromising situation that may result in body damage or part damage. I have banged my side panels, ripped off my bumper, destroyed the geriatric step, candy caned my driveshaft, winched myself out of places and did all of that on trails that didn't really need a locker. I would need to step up to some pretty difficult trails to justify the need for a front locker and at that point I might as well build a trail rig. A front locker would just pull me into situations that I probably shouldn't be going in the first place.

My point precisely. But if someone is going to do it anyway I suppose it makes sense to get it done while he is messing with gears.

I have never seen any solid correlation that OVtune causes the govern. There is not even a consensus that it is governed. I think it has more to do with inidividual trucks have odd problems.

Really wish we could clear this up. Would really suck to do 5.29s (which has been my plan) and not be able to go over 85.

Real question is why do you need to go over 85mph anyway on a Tacoma !?

Real question is why you can't scroll back a bit and see the multiple posts showing 5.29s over 85 mph

Sorry, not trying to be a dick, just getting kind of tired of answering this question basically every day.

I had scrolled back and read. But was struggling to find a clear answer. Was trying to figure out if OVtune is what causes this or not. I’ll stay out from now on. Sorrio!

All good man -- just frustrating to see it asked again and again. I do not know about it with OVTuned. Certainly with 5.29s my truck with 33s goes over 85. Even on stock gears it goes over 85 [calibrated correctly both times]

I am not sure where the rumor/statement began but it has spread like wildfire with (currently to me) NO actual evidence to support it. If someone can come forward and present some actual evidence I am happy to change my mind.

    Just venting a bit.

I am curious about that...My speedo has certainly gone over that. I have radar confirmed speed at 89. That seems like it warrants further investigation.

Your job now is to get a 91 confirmed by radar without the ticket that may accompany said radar monitoring
*edit* I guess radar confirmation won't matter since it's supposedly limited to what the truck perceives to be 90 be by it's calculations. 65 on my truck with 4.88s and 34.5 tires equals about 70 with a radar

I'll see what I can do. I've been trying to get it radar confirmed but my schedule has been busy unfortunately.

Regardless, I didn't feel like I was being limited/governed so... who knows. Maybe it only affects certain vehicles/years/whatnot. No idea.

I just realized radar confirmation is a moot point

Is a GPS not accurate enough to confirm?

On my truck with 4.88s and 34.5 tires my truck thinks I'm going 65 but a radar would show 70ish. I'm not certain but I think I recall the limiter being based off of RPM and gear selected (2900rpm 6th gear AT) so basically the speed you will be limited to will be the speed that you achieve with your tire size and your gear ratio when you hit 2900rpm in 6th in an auto and that speed displayed on the dash will be different than actual speed measured by radar.

Since no one has any empirical evidence to support speedo limitations either from gears or OVtune, it's nothing more than a rumor. A rumor that is unsubstantiated.

I'm not sure why we are spending so much time talking about.

The hearsay doesn't provide any added value at the moment especially for those looking to upgrade gears.

That’s not a question I’ve asked. Even if it is true why would you ever want to go faster than 85mph on a pick up is beyond me. For what it’s worth I do have 5.29s but no ovtune and no problems so far. Never found any limitations but than again I don’t really think I’d want to go that fast with all the gear I have.
