I missed it . What’s going on with the truck ? Did this start after your lift install ?

 

Nope... actually started before the lift. Took it to Toyota, they found nothing. Took it to another place just to "confirm", they found nothing... some time went by, it kept doing it and I got even more annoyed, so I took it to Toyota with a list of suggestions/feedback from peeps here, they checked everything on that list and found nothing. Only thing they found was that my rotors were warped and needed to be replaced, so I got that done, but still "shaking".

So I asked Firestone again yesterday just to take a look while they were doing my tire changeover, and they found nothing all well. Said everything seemed fine and was nice and tight. The main guy there did say that the only thing it could be is tire/rim combo... that sometimes, some cars are trucks are a bit "weird" when it comes to that, so that might be what it is. The more I think about it, the more it kind of makes sense... when I was running the OEM wheels with the tires it came with when I bought the truck brand new, it was OK. The "shaking" kinda seemed to happen when I went to the slightly larger winter tires, and then picked up a second set of rims to run with summer tires, which are also slightly larger then the small ones it came with from the factory.

All I know is that I'm baffled and puzzled as fuck. But everyone I asked to look at it says everything is fine.

Yea , I run the stock steel rims in the winter with 265/75 16s and American Racing Baja rims and 285/70 17s in the summer . I have a slight steering wheel shake with the winter tires at 47-53 mph and everything is good with the bigger wheel combo . Very weird !

 

I would bet it’s the wheel and tire combo . Maybe have them road force balanced

 

That's about the same speed range as myself... weird indeed. Now I feel a bit better to hear someone else has the same problem as I do.

What exactly is this, and what is the difference between this and a "normal" balancing?!

 

@Cativelense - think you need to try on a set of stock sized wheels.
Once you KNOW the vibration is from wheel size you can decide if beauty is worth the cost.
Once you know, the vibration will either be an acceptable cost or gone w/ the old wheels.

Good point. I'll think about it. For some odd reason, the "shaking" hasn't felt as bad since I got my summer wheels on.



By the way... our mutual friend stopped by my house yesterday afternoon to borrow something. Told me (I didn't bring it up, he did it on his own), about his little fender bender.



Showed me a picture of the bumper when it was hit. The thing practically popped right back out, and the only damage is a scuff mark and a little "broken" area because of the force. He was talking about wanting a steel bumper now instead.

 

AH HA! Good to know. I might look into this then, and see if Firestone offers it, or try to find a place around here that does.

LOL - steel bumper either wouldn't have bent or would have stayed bent....
Steel bumper is going to mean suspension upgrade too, but that thing appeared to be sitting low, probably time anyway.

 

I think his suspension is just about ready to go... it's an 07 with about 112k miles on it, been used for towing a lot, and snow plowing.

We spoke about that as well.

Had a free 20 minutes today, dropped the spare tire on the Taco.
… and beat the tire free from the hangar thingy. & I've been Fluid Filming - but last fall I did it myself & didn't drop the tire.

But the tire wound down nice & easy. guess i'd better exercise 4WD hi & low too.
