I'm no gear expert, but seems like 4.10 gears would have been the sweet-spot. A regear isn't in my budget either right now. Seems to make it the truck I really want I'd need another $5K.

Id imagine the engines are derated to increase longevity when used for truck duties.

Not even close. You wouldn’t even notice a difference with 4.1’s. 4.88’s even on a stock automatic with the double overdrive is better. The manual with 4.3’s puts out higher rpms than the auto with 4.88’s

I shouldn’t have to do that. The stock gears are obviously too tall

Agreed. That’s why I like 4.88’s because they don’t drastically change the gears in a way that’s annoying but makes better use of the 5th and 6th gear so the engine isn’t screaming at 5k rpms in 4th going up a hill. I’d rather pay for gears than a new transmission.

Will be interesting to see how many people utilize the warranty when we start seeing transmissions go if it happens under 100k miles

You make good points for 4.88s, as for me though I'll just limit the trans to 1 overdrive and save a few $$. :)

The price was a bit steep for me, but snagged a 13% or so sale and got it tuned up a few days ago. Have put 350'ish miles on it in the last cpl days. I could tell an immediate diff, even from the stock factory "relearning". So far I'm much happier with the transmission over stock. I wish it had been a hundred or two cheaper, but all in all I think it was worth it at 630ish.
I am going to post review after 500+ miles on the review thread end of next week. Will see if my opinion stays positive after then, but suspect it will

There does seem to be a legit learning curve for the software, though. I wasn’t sure about it when I first bought my truck, but when my battery died and was replaced the shifting was really jerky for a few hundred miles.

Are those RPMs combinations for 6AT only? The 6MT wit 4.3 and 30.6" tires is 2200rpm @65mph.

Yes. The MT produces much better RPMs than the AT because of its double overdrive. The MT with 4.3’s produces higher RPMs than the AT with 4.88’s. Go figure

For those who have it, do you feel it made overall experience of driving the truck more fun? I'm not looking for hp increase and I don't have a lot of the issues others complain about, but I do want this if it makes the truck more fun to drive overall. I do notice the dead pedal scenario which I believes this addresses, but overall I just want something that feels more fun and responsive if that makes any sense.

    It certainly does.

Most of the issues with this truck are the transmission not delivering the amount of power you want when you want it, and the throttle delay.

This fixes it for the most part, specially if you use 87 or 91/93 performance mode.

Either one of those tunes and the ECT and the truck flies lol

Perfect, that is what I wanted to hear. I have putting it off for some time, but I think i'm going to get it to tie me over for a year until my truck is paid off so I can then buy a sports car :). Sometimes it sucks being a responsible adult, should just get sports car now

i can't speak for the AT nightmare but in MT land the OV tune brings the fun, yes. of course a V8 swap would probably be more fun but all things relative this is a big step to having the motor run like it was designed, rather than factory-muted. muted anything is no fun, and yota did a damn good job of muting the crap out of this motor.

That was kind of my point. Somewhat better than the current stock ratio but nothing that would make a huge change - especially to MPG as that was clearly a goal of Toyota. Most people don't notice the issue now and a slightly shorter gear would have made it slightly better. I think 4.88 would have a noticeable impact on mileage so not something they would even consider on a stock vehicle. I'm not saying 4.10 would be a worthwhile upgrade, but I think would have been just enough better stock that some of these issues might not be issues. At least for most people. Although might not fix the transmission "problem" some have.
