2018 windshield replacement $885

I drilled a hole at the tip of the crack in an effort to prevent it from spreading. Drilling a hole in one's windshield at the exact tip of a crack is way easier said than done. I missed the first try and broke a drill bit. For the second try I went to Harbor Freight and bought a glass etcher drill thing for $9.99. It has a small diamond bit. This worked better but I don't think I went deep enough. I tried using a window repair kit thing and I was pressed for time and the kids were all jumping around. Ended up fucking that all up.

 

had mine replaced 1 month after i bought it...1. the actual cost of a brand new windshield is $800+, why? because glass companies have no other ones in stock so they have to wait for it to be made from the factory. 2. lowering your deductible from $1000 to $100 should effect your monthly payment by less then $5 if not find a new insurance company. 3. your insurance rate is based off your credit score and a few other factors ( have you caused a wreck, tickets, major claims, and your location) if you have had the same company for longer than 5-10 years its best to look around for cheaper rates or companies that offer different things..4. GEICO and all there save 15% is cool and until you actually need to use the it in the event like this. 5. Opinions are like assholes.. everybody has one... but all this is based off facts so feel free to google, call your insurance company and ask..rates can change every renewal because any one of those things listed can change, the insurance companies have the ability to pull your driving record, and credit score each and everytime you policy comes up for renewal without you ever knowing and you won't know until you start paying more because they don't inform you...i was with USAA for 15 years, are they good? yes, at certain things..cheap not being one of them, they also will not help you save money...i'm in no way trying to help the current company i'm using ( i wont name them) but i will be honest about it all... i went from paying $168 per month to $91 for the same coverage with $0 deductible for anything my truck may need, what changed in life to make it so different you ask? my credit score and the date, i still live in the same town and at the same address with the same job...all in all it never hurts to shop around and ask any question you can think of...good luck OP paying that much out of pocket sucks

 

Ive already replaced my 2017s windshield twice. First time was $380, second time $300ish. Its already got a really bad line, luckily its on the passengers side so it wont bother me for a while. They are too weak tho. A company down here sells a film to protect it but it costs $300-400.

 

If you have comprehensive coverage, it should be covered under there.

 

I wouldn't replace it until absolutely necessary like, state inspection, let it crack, the truck is relatively new so you shouldn't need a state inspection for a few years just leave it go.

 

I have a 2017 and mine was quoted at almost $800. Comprehensive glass coverage is $250 for me.

 

This is my current thought. Especially with so many getting cracked windshields with these trucks. Kansas does not do inspections. Hopefully my drill hole will keep it from spreading.

 

I'm lucky in that my glass fully covered. That being said, I've gone through NIGHTMARES with my windshield replacement(s).

The aftermarket glass JN Philips used was hot garbage, didn't fit, leaked, etc. They ruined my truck trying to get it in and out. I went through 3 additional OEM windshields that leaked / didn't fit right. When the OEM piece that they finally got to fit correctly cracked again (really?!) I went with a local indie guy. He used a FY windshield, threw it in with zero marks, fixed all the prior incorrect issues and I haven't had a problem since. According to him Pilkington who does OEM Toyota windshields has dropped significantly in quality. Whether that's true, I cannot comment.

 

check out YOUTUBE theres vids on how to stop cracks, at some point along the line you can find a less expensive way to replace it, if no inspections just keep on rolling, chances are your going to getting another rock in your windshield

 

You could take it to a glass company and let them drill a better hole and maybe drive it for years .

 

My credit score is like 840ish and I pay $304 for 500/500/100 with $1000 comp and collision deductible. I played around with the Geico website last night. To go from $1000 down to $200 comp and collision takes me to $410 every 6 months. So to break even in paying for the lower deductible I need to have a $800+ claim every 3 years 9 months. I have had very few claims over the years. I am not seeing any separate glass coverage option. I do not recall it being an option with other insurance companies I have gone with. Maybe it is not available in Kansas.

 

It is not about the camera being a part of the windshield it is about the re-calibration that has to take place because the windshield is being replaced. That is an additional $250 to $350 depending on who does it.

 

Yeah another guy already cleared that up for me. I was just wondering why since OP or the shop he went to didn't clarify

 

damn man, my score went from 600 now 795 in the course of 2 years, so you're doing better than I..thats odd for sure..do you live near a big city or something ( only reason i can think it would be so high) seriously not trying to patronize you or anyone else so don't think of it like that...i know all state/cities/companies and situations are different so comparing mine to yours or anyone else won't do much good but i do know for the most part the majority is looked at when making a rate....if Geico doesn't offer something for glass on their site have you tried calling to see if there is something now showing on the site? ( just throwing out ideas at this point) or ask other insurance companies to quote you a policy and see what they have to offer in terms of collision and comp.? i do know like others have said some states its free and not included in the insurance side and some state insurance don't cover it at all...california is a beautiful state with lots of stuff to see and do but damn they require a lot to sustain living there and won't help you in any way...sad really..after reading what you wrote again, maybe its just something that isn't offered like you said...good luck man

 

Is $304 for 500/500/100 every 6 months on the high side? That works out to $50.67 a month. I live in the Kansas City area so that might be a factor. I pay like $270ish every 6 months for the wife's 2016 Honda minvan. I need to check around. My insurance is due in June.

 

if that's $500 deductible for full coverage car insurance at $608 per year id say that's awesome for a new model truck

 

OP, sorry man was trying to read what you wrote and doing math in my head, $300 for 6 months is awesome compared to what some pay...so i went back and read some more...ok so if you lower your deductible to $200 it makes your 6 month payment go up to $410...honestly if thats all it goes up and you can afford it i would avoid the headache and just let it go up because whats the difference in cost per month? another $30-$40 if that... you get the windshield replaced for $200 out of pocket and your covered for any parking lot ding, backed into a pole or tree, or some random kid busting a headlight with a baseball during a game...sounds like a small price to pay for easy piece of mind to me...but in the end its you money and time to invest...i'm more of stress less easiest fix type of person especially when it comes to expensive parts someone else has to change and i can make out of the deal for cheap

 

I'm getting my windshield replaced next week. Glass coverage is part of my insurance as well and I don't have to pay a deductible either. If fact the glass company is paying me to do the work, ha.

When I was pricing it initially, the companies I called said Toyota had a national back order for Tacoma windshields for some reason. 6-8 week lead time. I apparently got lucky and someone cancelled in my area so I got it sooner than later.

 

WTF? Why would you even consider doing that?

 

Yeah taking a power drill to your windshield gets funny looks from passing neighbors. It is to try to stop the spread of the crack. Basically the crack leads up to a round hole and hopefully stops at that point. You only drill the first layer of the glass laminate. It is about a 1/16 to 1/8 inch hole in the first layer of the glass. It is not easy to do. But, as the song goes; freedom is just another name for nothing left to lose.
