Bug deflectors

The windshield on my 2017 is a bug killer. I live in rural Wisconsin where 7 months out of the year we have a huge assortment of the 6 legged winged bastards and my truck has done it's part to reduce their numbers, by a lot. After asking nicely here and several other places whether a bug deflector reduces windshield bug collisions significantly and not getting much more than "boy, it sure makes my truck look cool" I went ahead and installed one. I will know within the next few weeks if it helps, and if so, by how much. If anyone here cares I will let you know what I find out. If it even reduces BB (bug buildup) by half it's $50 well spent.

 

I'm also interested in this for rock protection.

 

If they still made the ones that were a flat piece of plexiglass they would do allot of good. I had them on other trucks I have owned along with my nick name painted on the front of it. Have not seen a flat bug shield in a coons age.

I have the AVS Areoskin II Hood Protector on my truck mainly just to protect the front edge of my hood. They do look nice on the truck also.

 

The AVS does make the air flow work up to about 3/4’s of the way up the windshield for smaller bugs, heavy bugs and rocks wont get deflected by it though. I like mine anyways.

 

Following @ChaseFan's suggestion in another thread, I bought and just installed the Aeroskin II. Too early to comment on "BB" or road crap deflection but it does look nice. It sits flat and has a raised lip across the center to deflect things and that lip must be good for at least 2 mpg by directing air flow over my Sports hood scoop.

 

Does anyone know of some kind of coating you can apply to the windshield so their guts don't adhere to the windshield? lol

 

I've found that Rain X helps the guts not stick as bad. I always use it before a long road trip!

 

Will also keep most of those million TINY TINY rock chips off your windshield.

AVS. Has helped with bug suicide.
Not to mention the added 10HP and 3MPG’s.

 

I use the Orange Rain-X window washer fluid and it works really well out here, especially during the caddis fly hatch along the Arkansas river.

 

Interesting. I got the AVS mid height and was hoping for bug reduction but never considered an mpg increase. I have checked my mpg often and have a good base (average 25.3 over the last 2 1/2 years). Had 3/4 tank when I installed this so will need to wait to check any accurate change. And yes, it does add to the looks of the truck, wife even said so.

 

Well the jury is in. Bug season has officially kicked off here in the midwest and my new AVS bug shield turns out to be just about worthless. Oh I guess there are less bug spatters on that little part of the hood right behind the thing but that's about it. So unless you are just wanting to add a piece of trim to the front of your truck, save your money.

 

It should help with rocks though. My shield has saved me a few times.

 

I put these up there with deer whistles, they don't do jack shit.

 

I just did an 800 mile trip. There were plenty of bug splats on my tow mirrors and grille but the Aeroskin II kept the windshield mostly clean. This was mostly at highway speed so your results may vary.

 

I've been running my AVS Hoodflector (21681) a few weeks now... I've noticed a decrease in splats. Not a "wholly crap what a night/day difference" difference, BUT... I feel like there are less.
