The axe on my truck is a Fiskars splitting axe for in camp and I carry a Silky saw for those times I find a felled tree. Only needed it once but even though the tree was larger than my saw, it still made reasonably quick work of it.

It would be a chainsaw or something if I had a frequent need but just can't justify it when the saw gets the job done for now.

I recently bought the harbor freight lynx electric chainsaw. Thing rips and I've used it to clear some trail already. Going to be bringing it in the truck from now on. I always have a full size Hults Bruk axe behind the seat for chopping up firewood but have never used it for off-roading only camping. When I go backpacking in the winter I pack an Agawa Canyon Boreal folding saw and a Fallkniven s1 knife to split firewood for my hot tent. You don't need a chainsaw and an axe, it just makes it a hell of a lot faster.

Ive got property in a remote place up in northern cali. I take a pulaski, a shovel, and a chainsaw with 18" bar. The pulaski and shovel ive used more for clearing large rocks and digging water bars than i have for splitting wood but its nice to have the dual usage and the security in case i get stuck. Chain saw comes out almost every trip to clear up the roads. Frankly, just an axe is stupid. Find something that serves more than one purpose. My advice is to look at where youre going and plan accordingly.

I would rather cut out trees with a chainsaw, but I don't keep one in my rig when I park at trailheads for a few days at a time. I've used a double bit axe and a hatchet to cut our way out from a trailhead in winter. Without it we would've been stuck, no amount of strap or winch would've done us any good.

I’m not trying to use my axe at all. I take it but this has suited me well. CF415974-BA84-4393-95C9-750A8F644A9F.jpg

It must be different in Alabama.
Here in VA, we can buck any fallen tree and use the wood for a campfire.
You only have to have a permit if you are taking the wood out of the forest.

I bring a small chainsaw and a splitting axe when I go camping.
    They live inside the vehicle.
Only Overland LARPers bolt axes to the outside of a vehicle.

    i keep 2 axes;
a traditional Polish mountain axe (or shepherd's axe) which is basically a tiny pole axe that doubles as a walking cane
    IMG_20190328_142239.jpg
and a regular el-cheapo 3lb-er from the Home Despot which i carry around as a just incase for ATV trails

I carry a Fiskars X17 and shovel and a chainsaw all under the trifold cover. I’ve needed all of it more times than not.

I have an old 2.5lb double bit cruiser axe that I pack when I'm venturing out on the old logging roads. Living in Maine you're more likely than not to find a downed tree across the road in the spring, and usually they're firs that are less than 8" wide. The axe takes up less space than a chainsaw & gear (and doesn't leak), and on a softwood of that size I can grab the axe & gloves and have the tree cleared in less time than it would take to get the saw, get geared up, and start cutting.

Until they fly off on the freeway. Word of caution, don't trust those shitty plastic washers that Quickfists come with, throw them away and put metal washers in their place...looking at your axe flying in the air behind your truck on the freeway is no fun

Hard on the blade & handle, too. Not to mention any cars it happens to hit...

Only while camping, chain saw for the trail. The X15 hatchet and X27 splitter are mine.

yeah, luckily I have the Fiskars one with the cover that goes over the blade, but when it landed (fortunately on the shoulder of the highway) the cover came off and it chipped up the blade pretty good. Axe still works well, just has a bit of character now lol.

Mine used to look like that once. Now it’s all fucked. Not very durable at all.
