DIY Oil & Filter Change on 2017 2018 2019 Toyota Tacoma 3 5 liter V6

Aloha all,

MY girl is wanting to learn more truck stuff, so she wanted to do the next oil change. We came up with this video, let us know what you guys think and comments welcome. We is wanting to do more and more truck stuff, but its all new to her.....

My dealership does my first few oil changes for free. Is there any reason, other than being out of that period, why you guy's are changing your own oil on a truck under warranty?

This is my first non-beater. So, I'm very fond of and used to changing my own oil. However, my dealer offers a lifetime power train warranty on their new vehicles so long as you maintain the truck EXACTLY as the owner manual specifies. For me, this is a major deterrent to changing my own oil.

Would recommend getting a fumoto valve every day of the week for all future oil changes, unless she continues to do them and you don’t care

 

You can change your own oil and still retain factory warranty. Keep receipts. Delaers don't care about your vehicle

Folks don't sell warranties because we need them, they sell them to make money. Lots of it.

Think yours is free? It's not.

That 'lifetime' warranty (with the rules that go with it) is going to cost you a pile of bucks.

 

so some dealer's lifetime powertrain warranty is dependent upon you using them for ALL your service. In that case, you must do everything through them- no indy mechanic and you can't do anything yourself. That is how they make a huge profit. No thanks.

In my case, they have no such clause and I have a lifetime power train warranty on engine/trans/axles/etc as long as i perform all the maintenance as required in the maintenance guide. I will echo what another poster stated. Dealers are infact idiots at least when it comes to basic stuff like oil changes. I prefer to do it myself as i know it will be done correctly. Too many bad experiences with dealerships screwing things up. Plus I enjoy doing the work.

Doing my own maintenance is also way way way more convenient for me. I can do it in my garage at midnight if i want to. Or on a sunday. Or whenever.

it's also way cheaper. Granted, the oil changes are free for the first 2 years BUT revert back to dealers being idiots as to why i choose to not take advantage of that free oil change cycle.

There may be some things I will have dealer do or indy's do- the whole torque the propeller shaft thing is one thing i am not 100% sure of. I have a torque wrench and would need to get the crows foot to do that but i don't have a lift to raise the taco up in the air and it seems that's a problem for some- i will check well before that is due and make a decision on that. I have less than 100 miles on her right now and have 14,900 to go before that.

 

I don't trust dealerships even though I have never taken any of my vehicles to a dealer for service.
I hear too many horror stories with a lot of trouble involved. An oil change is easy and well worth the sense of security I receive knowing I changed everything from the crush washer to the entire 6+ quarts.

 

the car i traded in on the taco- 2019 mustang gt pp1- the dealer did the first oil change because i had the ticking/rattle that is now rampant in those motors and i wanted it all documented. they shorted me 1 quart of oil. got home, checked it, was at the low mark and the manual states "if oil is at the low mark, add oil immediately". i had driven it 15 miles back from dealer to my house. Obviously i was livid and they told me it was all ok- which it probably was- and had me come back for them to check and top off. Their lead tech found the oil in fact low and added 1/2 quart to make it set right in the middle of the stick. that may seem minor but with the way those engines sound and some breaking, i didn't need the hassle. decided enough is enough and that was my first and last brand new ford. ford came out with a tsb in feb stating the tick and rattle is a normal characteristic of a 45k$ sports car. LOL. Not for me. Dumped it!

 

Our engines tick too, so you’re in for a bad time. Can’t imagine it was worse than my WRX tho. It knocked and had feedback in the pedals. Talk about giving you the bad feels.

 

i shouldn't say tick. it was a typewriter sound and random. their tsb even referred to it as a typewriter sound. Perfectly normal per ford. my taco's engine sounds awesome to me.

 

All of our engines are the same. You’ll hear it when it eventually runs the cycle to clear out DI carbon buildup. I don’t know anything about the new V8 motor Ford is using, but I’d assume it to be similar. Their ecoboost ones are the ones that no one should buy.

OP - you know you guy buy the boxes in Hawaii to dump your oil, right?

 

Awesome brah, I'm just waiting on my filter tool and a case of OEM filters before I change my 2017 first oil change. Only part you messed up on the video if you want to know was that she's got too much clothes on. Buwahaha.

it's not the DI or carbon buildup- i noticed it at 200 miles on the ODO. that was after buying it 3 days prior. I bought that car new. I guarantee it's not carbon build up or the DI UNLESS the DI is doing something weird and with that said, the coyotes motors back to 2011 have the same typwriter noise i mentioned and that was well before DI. it's sloppy internal engine clearances causing the noise and ford doesn't want to admit to it. i don't care now. i got what i wanted.....

 

i mean he has a point. it is hawaii afterall... LOL.
